One of many reasons we prefer a duvet! You can remove the duvet cover and put it in the washing machine, no problem. (We got home from a vacation once and our house-sitter had, very nicely, washed our ENTIRE duvet with the cover still on - I guess she thought it was a comforter. We were amazed it went through our front-load high efficiency washer without any disasters).

When we had bulkier comforters, the DH would take it to the laundry mat to have it washed and dried.

We recently picked up some plain comforters from Costco that are alternative down. Thin but warm. They are thin enough that I can put them into our washer and dryer. Best decision so far. I picked up another comforter recently so we can alternate between them.

We have a thin quilt for the warmer months - that goes in the washer/dryer. In the winter we use a down comforter and it has a duvet cover on it, so I just wash the duvet regularly (with the sheets) and not the comforter. Is that gross? I figured it's ok because it's never exposed directly. If it got dirty (dog barf, etc) I would definitely have it cleaned.

I don't but we also don't actually sleep with it so there's that. lol we just use a fuzzy blanket layer with a top sheet. The comforter is just decoration. If I ever were to wash it though I would have it dry cleaned

my queen comforter fits in my washer, my cat used to get sick on it all the time, so it's been washed A LOT. depending on what kind of comforter it is, maybe just take it to a laundromat that offers wash and fold, they have really big washers at the laundromat.

I have one that's not as heavy (and queen sized) that I can wash at home. DH takes our heavier one to the dry cleaners

Or you can often use the big industrial size washers at the laundromat and they'll fit.
