@Iced Tea: you are so right. In New York it is really not the done thing. I'm in the suburbs now, but that way of thinking has really stayed with me.

Not really. I wear my actual workout clothes when I'm going to and from the gym. I have one pair of long boot cut yoga pants that I have worn on occasion without me actually working out in them all day. Otherwise, my run around wear are sloppy sweats.

@meredithNYC: I SAH too & am the same way. I change my clothes out of pjs daily, even if we don't leave. I feel good when I get dressed & am more productive. That being said, I do have on yoga pants today (chores all day) but I am "fixed" otherwise & would totally run out to the store this way if needed.

i don't wear real athletic wear, but i wear comfy things! today i'm wearing ponte pants, a tee, a BF cardi that is long enough to cover my bum, and a scarf. it was raining and i wanted something i could wear with my rain boots.

one comment on this trend though, i would appreciate it more people would point out to men that if you're going to wear athletic pants (this could apply to any pant really), you should be wearing ones that others don't have to see your junk through, if your junk is super apparent, you shouldn't leave the house that way, please & thank you. and ladies, if i can clearly see your lady bits, you should change.

I don't feel right wearing this style outside of home and the yoga studio. I will admit, before moving to New York I would wear yoga pants and other casual things out and about, but the city cured me of that. The expectations are quite different; people tend to look put-together most everywhere. In the city, it's mainly just the very young that dress in this "athleisure" style. When you see someone older dressed this way (even the more fashionable version in the photos), people seem to judge them for trying too hard to look young.

I just moved to a much more casual kind of town, so I sometimes drop by the store on my way home from yoga class. Still feels weird wearing athletic clothes outside of home/class.

@meredithNYC: I hear you about being put together, I think that's where you have to know what works for your body type and go with it. I, for example, do not look good in skinny jeans or leggings and big tops that seems to be the default around here. I am much better suited to trouser style pants and a slimmer top.

eta: I guess what I am saying is that I don't particularly pay attention to what other people are wearing. I might notice if someone is really dressed well, but most of the time, people are pretty unimpressive, including myself!

Noooo. Literally the only places I wear yoga pants are at home, to the gym, to class when Im too freaking tired after an all-nighter to put on real clothes, and to rehearsal because we're required to. I honestly always put in the effort to at least throw on jeans. It makes me feel really sloppy and I think I still have that military wife voice in my brain telling me that someone is going to call me a dependapotamus for going to the grocery store in sweats.

Around the house, sure. I haven't found a good pair of postpartum jeans and yoga pants are much more comfortable for the constant bending and kneeling and running and sitting down with a toddler.

Hardly ever when I am out though. For one, I feel sloppy. For another, I hardly ever get the chance to wear "real" clothes so I like to do that if I can. And it also feels a little rude? Maybe that's not the right word. I would never think someone is rude who showed up at my house in yoga pants, but I just can't do it for some reason.

My mother in law dresses like this exclusively. As my mom put it, "she is very committed to her one style." Which was a little snarky, but yeah she is totally right.

On the other hand, maybe I just need a better fitting pair of yoga pants! Mine are kinda big now and so I feel sloppy.

Where I am is VERY casual. Yoga pants are a weekend staple for everyone that I know. I would never ever wear them to work or out to dinner but to run to Target on a Saturday, for sure. I still haven't found jeans that fit right after having P.

I really love the urban/athleisure look. My husband is a really serious biking guy, and he's started wearing bike gear type jackets and such day to day. I had to talk him into it, but I assured him that it was a Very Cool look, and that he didn't look like a huge dork or anything. We're quite the dorky pair.

I don't. Mainly because it isn't my style, but also because it just doesn't look good on me--I end up looking really gross and sloppy. I'm sure a few people can pull it off without looking sloppy, but I am not one of them.

I type this as I lounge around my house in skinny jeans, a button up shirt, and a boyfriend cardigan. This is my "lounge wear" unless I am literally in my PJs right before going to bed or right after waking.

@meredithNYC: I definitely agree about pajama's in public - I hate that. I would prefer yoga pants/leggings over that any day.
@Mrs.Panda: I prefer yoga leggings or just leggings in general for actual yoga, or any working out really.

Just for reference - this is the type of "athleisure" that I like:

@looch: it could also be because I'm at home, I don't want to head down the slippery slope of always dressing way down because I don't want that to be my norm. My jeans are also cheap, so I don't worry about messing them up! But for the most part, when I'm out and about with LO or running errands it's skinny jeans, boots, cardigan type of deal. By no means "dressed up" but I guess put together? I had the kind of mom who refused to even go to the grocery store after her runs at the YMCA because she thought she looked a mess!

Jeans are not my typical out to dinner wear, either, but I MUCH prefer seeing a nice pair oh jeans to sweats/yoga pants.

@meredithNYC: I guess I differentiate between the grocery store and a nice restaurant...if I am going to do errands, like I did today, I don't dress up. The real reason is that I don't want to change 100 times a day, I just can't be sitting around the house in $100 jeans when my son is sick, wants to go to the sandbox, my husband calls from the front yard and needs help putting leaves in a bag, etc.

It's totally different if I am actually going somewhere that requires a proper outfit though. I didn't wear jeans for almost 15 years post college, so I like to have options! I can't remember the last time my husband and I went out for dinner but I assure you I didn't wear jeans!

@looch: I don't find them super comfortable, either, but I'm just a curmudgeon in that I don't feel like we should necessarily always be super comfortable anyway - like sometimes decorum should trump comfort. Jeans used to be considered excessively casual and now that's no longer the case so I'm like, what's next? Obviously it can always get worse - i.e. pajamas in public.

All that said, I live in a part of the country where this is possibly less of a thing? When I am back home in the Midwest I am often shocked at how people will dress in say, a nice restaurant. It makes me feel like the odd one for actually making an effort.
