Best thing ever!!!! If I could have done LASIK I would have done that over PRK because you heal faster and apparently its less painful. It just wasnt an option for me. When I first went (about 10 years ago) I was too young and didn't qualify due to my astigmatism. We've both worn glasses since we were super young. I wear contacts pretty much 18 hours a day (-8 and -8.5!) and Wagon Sr. wears glasses because contacts can't correct his vision enough (he has a very low prescription but severe astigmatism, which makes him a great candidate for lasik). Our kids are screwed unless they get their uncle's (my BIL's) eyes. He's got perfect vision, and he's the only one!!! ladyfingers on "Do you wear glasses? I've been told I can't get LASIK bceause my pupils are too large? IDK, it was just an offhanded comment an eye doctor made a long time ago. I had some eye trauma when I was 12 (I had just started wearing contacts), so now I can no longer 1) regularly wear contacts and 2) ever get LASIK because I have scar tissue on my cornea. I was really sad when I was 12 and they told me I would have to wear glasses for the rest of my life! But I almost lost my right eye and I've embraced my glasses now. And DH likes glasses! But obviously, that isn't the case for everyone, I just felt like being as conservative as possible.I think I remember hearing after 25 was recommended. Something to ask at your evaluation, if and when you go. If your vision hadn't changed in years, then it probably wouldn't matter. Mine didn't stabilize until my late 20s. Like, can't read the alarm clock or see pretty much anything without glasses or contacts. Contacts started really bugging me in my mid to late 20s, and while I liked my glasses, I did not like being SO dependent on them. When I was a camp counselor, taking the kids swimming really freaked me out because I felt like I couldn't watch them well enough. I had Lasik done when I was 28 and it was one of the best things I've done. They told me since my eyes were so bad, I had a slightly increased risk of my eyesight still not being perfect and needing glasses or a slight adjustment after. This was the case and now I need my glasses for driving, movies, and powerpoint type presentations, but not for day to day stuff. Even knowing that, I would 110% do it again, since now I don't NEED them, and I can comfortably do anything except drive without them. If you are considering it, a few things to note: they recommend not doing it right before you get pregnant or right after, as the hormones can cause your eyes to do some weird things and it just wouldn't be the best time to do it. Also, I've heard waiting until your late 20s is better, but if you get it done later, like mid 30's on, they sometimes will undercorrect one eye so you can go longer before needing reading glasses-- which almost everyone will at some point. I'm not a good candidate for Lasik, not that I'd get it I'm scared of lasers shooting at my eyes! My eyesight isn't too bad and I can survive without my glasses, but it's just so much better with them. I didn't get glasses until 8th grade when I put on my little sister's glasses and was like "Whoa! Everything is so clear!" whoops. DH has perfect vision. My eye doctor recommended I wait until I'm 25 to look into surgery (which is in March). Once we get settled in to a house and some debt paid off both DH and I hope to get the surgery. I begged my parents to let me have contacts in high school. I wore contacts throughout high school and college. Now that I have a desk job where I stare at 2 computer monitors all day, I absolutely cannot wear contacts - they bother the heck out of me!! I live in my glasses. I have horrific vision and needed contacts 24/7 unless I'm sleeping. There's not enough cornea for them to burn off if I go with Lasik. Only resolution is inserting a permanent contact. I switched to contacts in 6th grade when I was getting SCUBA certified. Now I alternate between contacts and glasses, though I typically stick to glasses because I'm lazy.
