@mrsjyw: thanks! My mom helping me would be the perfect solution, but I don't think my mom is interested... sigh.

I wah 2-3 days a week sometimes more and depending on my projects/workload/deadlines I drop ds off at my mom's or she comes over to watch him while I work. I think you could pull off your current schedule while LO2 is an infant if you put LO1 in preschool or daycare f/t. But elsewise, it may be a struggle! (Can't wait to "mt" LO2!!)

BUMPING this post... any other WAHM's that don't have child care? My situation is a little unique in that my LO goes into daycare and I go to work 2 days a week. Then I have 9 hours a week where I WAH and unless I have a meeting, I keep LO with me (YES I know it's technically not allowed but as long as I get my work done, my boss has allowed it). It has worked out decently so far because I can spread my hours out but man, it's getting tougher and tougher (LO is now 14 months).

My big dilemma is coming... #2 arrives in August and I am quite sure my work won't allow me to continue WAH w/o childcare nor will I be able to get anything done! So I guess I'm just looking for anyone else that has ever tried to WAH with two, ideas, advice, etc. I am thinking of either:
1. becoming a SAHM full time
2. or putting my older LO in a preschool setting while I WAH if I want to continue my schedule.... then I would WAH with the infant...

Of course, if the perfect nanny fell from the sky that would solve all my problems but it doesn't look good :(

I don't know if this counts, but I worked with Piper in the office with me from 6 weeks to 16 months! Honestly, I just got so much better at maximizing my time, and doing what HAD to be done right away with her either in my lap, in her swing, in her stroller, and I did everything else while she was napping. I guess I just got used to multitasking. :)

I run my own consulting business and when we have a baby, I'll probably not get regular childcare but bring someone in for when I have meetings, etc. at least when he/she is still an infant. When he/she gets older, I'll get a nanny/daycare.

DD is 5 weeks old, and I am a WAHM. I work during her nap-times, and when DH gets home from work. Being my own boss allows me to have complete freedom on my work schedule.

I couldn't have done my work while watching my son. I would have to facilitate conference calls and training sessions which would be near impossible with him screaming in the background. If I had the kind of job where I worked independently, then yes, it might have been an option.

@HabesBabe: I think it's based on the individual company's policy. I know my company forbids you being the "caregiver" for any individual if you have flexible work arrangements.

My own boss is pretty forgiving about it as a one-off if schools are closed due to bad weather or a kid is sick though, but I"m sure if it was every day I'd be in big trouble if they found out.

Though I do not (but would love to...unfortunately my job you can't work at home). But my mother did. She seemed to manage her time quite effectively, and was great at multitasking. I was never a kid to plop in front of the TV but it did teach me some independence and ability to entertain myself when she was busy working.

DS has never been in childcare and now I home-school (or am starting to) and am "self-employed"

He's pretty self entertaining, but he really didn't have any choice to not be so it's worked out. It was only hard at first to get the established boundary of how to act where (like in the office) and when (like when I'm making calls)

He's really great about it now and haven't had any problems in quite a while....

Now if I could just get better efficient & consistent with our "school time"... sigh

I could have sworn from my friend in HR that it's illegal (?) to work from home and not have childcare-- maybe it depends on the state, or depends on what your job situation is. I don't think my employer would be very happy about it, and I know either my work would suffer, or my kid.

No way. I think you need a kid who is happy to entertain themselves in order to do that. My LO is not happy if my attention is on the computer and not her. Plus she doesn't nap.

My bonus son is now 4 and goes to preschool 3 days a week until noon, but that's a relatively new thing. I think since it's always been this way, he's used to it. He entertains himself more than other children and has an outrageous imagination. He also still naps for 2 hours a day so I rush to get as much done as possible during that time. I also break up my day so he's getting plenty interaction from me. We will do an activity for 30 minutes and then I will work for an hour. So then he's not bothering me for my attention the entire time. So far it's worked out pretty well. On days where he is sick though, sometimes I have to save all of my work for once he's gone to bed, which is stinky for sure.

Our creative director does it, and I have no idea how. Her son is two months older than Charlie, and she's never had childcare! I think she's just super efficient with her time -- a skill that I obviously need to improve!

I got a glimpse of just how hard it is when Charlie was out sick from daycare Thurs-Monday. He was a cranky mess and the only reason I was able to get anything done was because he watched a whole lot of Barney.

Those of you who work from home with no childcare... how do you do it?!?
