i never sat down just to teach or help him learn things, but i find it is always incorporated into our play or conversations....like asking him what colours he sees or to count how many of something we are playing with or to sing the alphabet song. stuff like that. and we read a ton just because he loves it.

no, actually never occurred to me. when he's in grade school and starts to have homework, i'll work with him, but for these years i'll just let the preschool do it's thing and just do regular play stuff at home without an agenda.

Ye, but it's never in a lets sit down at the desk and learn kind of way. For example, they do letter of the week at school. So then for that week DH and I will concentrate on pointing out things that start with that letter. When were in the car we'll do the same and ask her if she knows what letter certain items start with, etc.

Yes, we work on learning all the time at home – but we do it the same way they learn at preschool, which is organically and naturally like what @honeybear and others have described. Almost everything is a “teachable” opportunity in my eyes; I’m always asking her questions to engage her thinking about the world and making connections. We don’t ever sit down and do blah rote exercises, drills or the like (and they don’t ever do that in preschool either).

If LO went less than the full 5 days a week, I would definitely feel more pressure to “work on things” at home, but still to really just make it fun and easy learning. I want to foster learning as something that happens naturally every day and is just part of life, and I feel like the best way to do that is to model it at home.

Depends on the day, he's really into puzzles and flash cards right now. So I do the puzzles w him, I'm more of an audience w flash cards though. He likes flipping cards over and telling me what it says, etc.

Not really. Only if stuff comes up organically---counting the grapes on her plate at snack, Counting the steps as we walk them when we go outside, reading stories together, etc.

We don't do workbooks or that kind of thing, but we play a lot of games that involve numbers and counting because my son is digging it right now. We're playing Monopoly and he's learning how to add and subtract using the dice and the money.

@honeybear: this is what we do too. We dig deeper around interests.

Both of my LOs go to daycare that does some preschool style activities. The only thing I want to work on with my son before he starts elementary school this fall is lower case letters. He knows all the uppercase ones just fine.

Yes and no. We talked and read constantly, which the best type of "academic work" for preschool in my opinion. When he showed interest in a topic, we dug up books on it and read them, or we looked up videos, etc. But formal, sit-down work was at the bottom of my agenda. I almost never quizzed him about letters, colors, numbers, etc. I just made sure that we encountered those in our reading, as we talked about things, and as we worked on projects. I didn't think it was necessary to do drills.

We do. We practice things she's already learned or working on. Counting by 2s, 5s, 10s. Spelling colors. She counts for time out too. When can I get up? Count to 42 or 65, etc. Also when we are in the car we talk about recent learning and usually adapt to our passing scene.

LO is 2 and not in preschool but we do spend time almost every day in some kind of "enriching" activity together. I follow her lead. She's been interested in letters for a while so alphabet puzzles and blocks are a favorite. I like to incorporate "learning" into seasonal activities too - like at Thanksgiving we did T is for Turkey.

She's going to Montessori preschool in the fall at almost 3 for 2 days per week and they are big on working with parents to continue the "works" at home. We'll probably get some of the Montessori materials to have at home so the days she is not at school, she can keep practicing.

I do but it's not a set activity or time. I follow her lead. She's very interested in reading so we do some reading activities...for instance tonight we are doing a puzzle that connects a word with it's picture. Her teacher sent home a worksheet that LO had a problem with, understanding the concept of fewer so while we did her hair I used her hair bands to show her. I try to do things organically and make it fun.

I did with DD1 but I haven't found as much time to do so with DD2. DD1 has a lot of homework every day so that just has to be the priority. But DD2 is only 3 so I don't need to pressure her either!

I don't, because I feel like it's too early to start drills and that sort of teaching. She learns through experience at this age (3), so I'm not really feeling like sitting down and teaching her letters yet. I'll probably start next year to prep for kinder.

If your LO is in preschool, do you still work on things with them at home? Like letters, numbers, colors etc...

I was really good about working with LO the summer leading up to the school year, and she really enjoyed it! Now that she is in school I've slacked on working with her. I guess I figure I'm paying for someone else to teach her these things so we spend the other time just playing/reading and doing other things. I'm sure she is still constantly learning things from me, through play, though.
