@JennyPenny: interesting!

I think my concern is that companies are always trying to make do with less workers. A way to get productivity without paying a wage? Heck yea, I feel like companies would be drooling over that for the future.

Someone above had mentioned the universal basic income. I am fascinated by this topic! What kind of society will we be in the future? *ponders*

@sarac: a lot of those things are being automated now though! I think chefs will be completely automated within 10 years... and there are some amazing diagnostic AIs now.

I think human-like bodies are behind on the development curve, so nurses and mechanics have more protection for now. But wouldn't be surprised if that changes by the time our kids are in the workforce!

No. You can't automate being a doctor, or a nurse, or a teacher or a social worker. Or a mechanic or a computer programmer or a chef. I can barely even think of any jobs you could legitimately automate. It's not a thing we need to worry about.

No, I don't worry about it. I saw someone say recently that ever since the industrial revolution we have been creating automation for what humans do. And yet the unemployment rate is still low. People have still have to design and program and test what's automated. And plenty of jobs can't be automated.

This documentary about South Korea is super intersting. It highlights the problem of having an overly educated population, but not enough white collar jobs. The result is an increase demand for stable, blue collar jobs. People are in line to be a mechanic. The story also follows some South Koreans that pay a ton of money to leave their high salary jobs to work in manual labor abroad.

I think that this story illustrates that the outcome of technology doesn't necessarily follow a straight and predictable path.

@JennyPenny: I agree. Being comfortable and productive with technology in a multitude of ways will be essential to entry into the workforce. It will be a third arm in so many jobs. I can't imagine being a teacher without a computer. I was issued one on the first day of work and it is essential for collaboration and communication, not to mention teaching.

I was just reading an opinion article about this very subject (I forgot the source) where the author was using this to make a case for a minimum income like they are testing in Finland. But yeah this will definitely shape how we raise our kids and what we encourage them to study!

I work in AI and I am not worried about this at all. It looks and feels like great advances have taken place really quickly but that's just because decades of hard-fought research has finally reached the point where it's consumer-ready and also consumer-interesting. I have yet to meet someone in the field who actually thinks AI could ever replace the majority of jobs. We mostly just look for ways to help people do their jobs better. That being said, if you're worried about the career futures of your children, encouraging them to be comfortable using, understanding and creating technology can only be beneficial. As tech becomes ubiquitous those skills are applicable in any domain from medicine, to education, etc. So if you build those skills while focusing on other passions I think you'll be in a strong position for success.

I haven't thought that far ahead as I think it's going to impact our careers too if we work in a field that can be taken over by AI. Because of this evolution, there's a big push where I work to learn new things quickly and become more focused/deep thinking with work as that will be key to being able to keep a job.
I wish I had gone into health care working with patients directly instead of behind the scenes.

I was literally just thinking about this and came to post! I am not sure what to say, though! LO wants to be a nurse, so for now I think that's a good path...

I do a lot of work in tech, and am in awe of what AI is now capable of doing. My kids are 5 and 7 and I have no idea what the world will be like when they graduate high school.

Last year, I was watching the AMC show Humans and there was this whole subplot where the family's high school daughter didn't see the point in studying since robots could do almost everything she could possibly learn. I think we'll reach that point pretty soon, actually! And that's for college-level work; I think that trade professions will be automated even faster than that.

I have no idea what this all means. What should our kids do when all the jobs are gone, and done by robots/computers... just follow their dreams? For now I will just assume that the workforce will be really competitive and prep my kids accordingly, but it's actually a really uncertain situation and I worry a lot about their futures.
