I get some of our wood toys made locally, this time of year is a great chance to check out craft fairs. There's a guy who made me a set of 10 little farm animals that I got unfinished to paint myself. He charged me $20! So cheap! And the rest of his toys are finished with oil or beeswax I think.

@Thehistoryofus: you don't have to buy wooden. there are quality plastic toys. green toys are a great brand made of eco-friendly recycled materials. once your lo is past the age of putting things in their mouth, you don't have to worry about the quality of plastic as much.

I have also heard that since Melissa and Doug went to china a lot of people lost faith in the quality.

Also as we see the popularity of these toys increasing they are easy to find at places like Walmart and target but again those are almost always made in china and I really question the quality. I love some of the ideas posted today for their imaginative qualities but I don't know I can get behind the wood aspect yet especially with a limited budget.

@Mrs. Bee: Ohh I can't wait for that!

We don't have a lot of wooden toys yet as LO is only 3.5 months old. We do have a lot of plastic toys but a good amount of them are open ended. I never even considered the quality of the wood though, that's a good point. I know a lot of people buy Melissa and Doug, I'm sure their quality is good, but definitely something to look into.

i am planning on doing a whole series featuring some of my favorite wood toy manufacturers. they are all based in europe. brands like sevi, janod, egmont, grimms are all great.

i think melissa and doug is generally good too. they make so many products and some of them get mixed reviews, but overall i still think they are a good brand. (and affordable too!)

I loved Mrs Bees post today about wooden toys. But a crunchy mom friend of mine scared me because she is always very worried about only getting high quality wood toys. She has brands she looks for that she knows uses safe paints and thins for kids to chew on and won't chip etc. at least with plastic I don't worry about paint chipping into daughters mouth and I can buy used knowing I can bleach them.

I have shyed away from buying wood toys because I don't know how to look for quality without spending a fortune at specialty shops. Any suggestions? What do you look for or avoid? Any specific brands?
