Dh or I will be able to drop off, and I would be able to be home for pickup at my current job, but I'm thinking about changing up my career a bit so we'll see in 2017!

We've got a couple of years to decide, but I really want to be there when he comes home. I'll probably have to change up my hours and start work days at 7 or 8 am to make it happen. I'd try it out now, but DS is totally not ready... he has a meltdown if he walks up and I've already left for work.

Also kind of hoping to get him into sports and/or music classes, if we can figure out the logistics. He needs to do sports very much... the kid's energy level is through the roof, and he just doesn't get enough exercise in day care.

Our district has free pre-k 3 and pre-k 4 programs, so we will face this in just 1.5 years. Right now LO is in daycare 7:30-3:30; when she starts pre-k we'll enroll her in before and after care, so she'll go about 7:45-4:15 or so.

My 1st grader goes to after school care on site two days out of the week. I pick her up three days out of the week and we go to straight to lessons like ballet and piano ( I changed to a part time schedule to accomodate this). There are many before and after school programs here that bus kids to and from school. I also see some moms walking home with at least 5 or 6 kids so I'm guessing they may be helping out by watching neighbors' kids.

I think because DS misses the cutoff, we're going to have to do kindergarden at daycare, so essentially no change. If he needs to repeat kindergarden, or they allow us to ignore the cutoff, then we can either pay for full time kindergarden + after school care, or we can have him bussed to daycare for aftercare.

No idea. Our daycare will pick up and drop off in a certain vicinity, otherwise we're SOL. The school we're looking into, I believe, is not in the Daycare vicinity so... I have no idea. The school has a morning and end of day bus, so one way wouldn't be an issue, but kindergarten is half a day, so we would need someone to pick up up and bring him back to the daycare in the afternoon...

No idea. I'm hoping my husband can take him in the morning because his hours are a bit more flexible, but he will need to be in after care for a bit until I am able to pick him up.

We are researching preschools right now, some of them do after-school and pick-up for children. We may also have another child around the time she goes to school so perhaps we will get a nanny who will pick LO from school.

In a perfect dream world, I would sell my novel in the next 2 years and become a full-time novelist and be able to pick LO up from school. A girl can dream.

We're looking into a private Kindergarten for this very reason. Our local elementary school is half an hour from both DH and my work and we don't have consistently flexible enough schedules to make it work without after school care (and probably before school care too). Just seems easier to do a private school does before/after right there. Ugh.

I will say a few years from now when both kids are in public school I really hope to go PT - I figure with all the $$ I am not spending on DCP it will be easy to do! I would love to be home by 3:30 when school lets out!

DH and my hours are flexible enough in the mornings so we won't need before care. After care will likely be my mom some days and one of us the other days.

ahhh i can't wait for kindergarten. It's full day, NO TUITION, in our school district. The local YMCA opens at 6:30 and closes at 6:00 for before/after care. It's a 9am-4pm program for us, so E will need care before school, but DH will be off to pick her up.

Our DCP takes him to school and picks him up. He eats lunch at DCP and they have Kindergarten Enrichment - so lots of fun activities while learning. They also help him with his homework.

Although it sucks because its not too much cheaper than paying DCP fees - but I have no other choice!

Once he starts 1st grade I will have him do before and after care at the elementary school - so much cheaper!!

eta: K is only 1/2 day here!

My daughter starts public Kinder this September and I have been thinking about the same thing. We will drop her off at 9a when school starts and then go to work. School ends at 3:55 and right now she's on the waitlist for after-school care. However, we were told that it's unlikely a space will open up for her. My husband works from home most of the time and can probably pick her up. The problem is that he will still be working and she will just be keeping busy on her own, which is fine I suppose. If he's unavailable to pick her up, I will probably just take an hour of leave and leave work early.

Or I am thinking going part-time, like working 7 hours a day, if my work allows.

We've got two options. She will either move to the school aged program at her current preschool or we'll put her in the after school program at her actual school. We really haven't decided yet. But she doesn't start school until Sept 2016 so there is lots of time.

I hate that our daughter will have to do before and after school care just because we both have to work outside the home. I hope we can find a way to have her stay with a neighbor after school so she can at least be close to home when we finally get home from work at night.
