Nah! Because he is tiny. Some days he eats so much and then another day just snacks. Also appetite slows around a year (I think?). I do worry that he's not eating enough of certin foods. He's gotten picky lately.

Wow! I'm super impressed with your LO's appetite! I think he eats more than I do!

I don't think I'd be too concerned as it seems like his meals are paced and he's self-feeding.

We have the complete opposite problem that you do!

My LO has always been a big eater too. I used to ask about it at every well visit. My ped said that if he isn't throwing up than he isn't eating too much. She, like everyone else, also thought he would slow down by now nbd didn't. At 19 months, he still eats more than I should on most occasions. I do tend to give carbs, if any, late in the meal. Then I follow up with fruit. He can eat an insane amount of veggies and protein, then eat an insane amount of pasta salad, and still have room for an insane amount of fruit. People that see him eat are always shocked. He always asks for more. I do cut him off sometimes, but generally don't worry anymore since he is filling up on healthy foods.

That sounds about like what DS eats. His appetite has actually been curbed a little the past few weeks and I can't figure out why. They always tease me at daycare about how much the kid can eat and he is not even 18 lbs at 10.5 months!

I do worry he doesn't get enough BM though.

I don't worry that LO eats too much solid food, but I do worry sometimes that she eats too much fruit! I swear, she eats half her weight in fruit a day - peaches, cherries, blueberries, strawberries...

@jmarionsmith: I have this same fear, that she will not be a happy camper once the formula is gone. She's still doing 5-6 bottles a day plus 3 meals and 2 snacks. Formula is going to be a hard one for us to get off of!

@FutureMrsMcK: Then it sounds like he's fine. W does the same thing - she eats as much as I do (sometimes more). They're growing like crazy! I do worry about how much our grocery bills will be when she's in high school - lol!

@BabyBoecksMom: We start with a little bit and he asks for more (well, more like whines until we give him more) or grabs at my plate. I don't offer that much at once.

I wouldn't worry. This is my son and he was Failure to Thrive (yeah 3 hot dogs in one sitting and apparently we weren't feeding him enough and he was snacking on breast milk). Just keep offering the varieties and let him choose. Those little guys burn off a lot of calories.

I think the same thing about DD, but as soon as I get concerned, she'll only pick at what we give her. You said he's walking around everywhere, so he needs all that food to keep up his energy (and they have a TON of energy). As long as the doctor doesn't see anything wrong, then I think you're fine.

One question though - do you always give him that much food to start with? Or do you give him a little bit and make him ask for more?

If he's self feeding, and not stuffing himself, then it sounds like he just has a hearty appetite! Watch, now that you've posted this, he'll become the pickiest toddler in the world once he turns 2 :) j/k, I hope that's not true!!!

@jmarionsmith: Solid is a much better word than dense, lol. I swear E is just all muscle. He's been supporting his own head/neck since he was about a week old. I never had a floppy newborn. And he's hit all of the physical milestone on the early side. I'm glad I'm not alone!

@Freckles: He's been steady since about 4 months, so I'm not really worried, I just see how much some other LOs around his age (and older) eat, and I wonder if I'm overfeeding him...

Yes, some days i am. But she doesn't drink cow's milk so i tell myself she's making up for it with her meals.

As long as he isn't moving up in the growth charts (percentile) then i think it's fine.

LO is dense too. She does have a big belly but she's lean elsewhere and is consistently in the 50th percentile for weight.

i have this same concern! my lo eats more than most toddlers and kids i know and even more than some adults. and like e, he's not chunky, i like to say he's solid.

i'm concerned when he's weaned from formula at 12 months that i won't be able to keep him full! but i think that is when kids start having snacks between meals.

i know none of this really helps you but just know you're not alone!!

First off, I am very grateful that (so far) E has a fantastic appetite. He always cleans his bowl out (usually by licking it), has tried a decent variety of foods of varying levels of spiciness (he's eaten some things that are almost too spicy for me with no problem) and has yet to turn anything down.

(Short answer: we struggle with sleep, not feeding).

But in the back of my mind I'm a little bit worried that he's eating too much. When we were at the beach this weekend one morning he ate: 2 pieces of toast, 2 Eggo waffles, and 2 scrambled eggs. After he had nursed for half an hour. (DH and MIL fed him). Another morning he had 3 eggs and 2 pieces of toast.

For lunches he can eat a sandwich, a banana and a piece of string cheese. For dinner he usually eats an entire bowl of whatever I've made (last night it was curried lentils and potatoes over rice with piece of flat bread), plus a handful of fruit.

He's definitely just picked or stopped eating at times, so I know he gets full and he eats slowly enough that I'm not concerned he's just stuffing his face and not recognizing he's full.

Despite all of this he's still pretty lean. At his 9 month appointment he was in the 75th or so percentile for weight, which is where he's been for months (he started out in the 90-something, and then dipped into the 80-something, and is now settled in the 75th). His pedi isn't concerned, but she was a bit surprised that he didn't weigh more given how much he eats. (He still has 2-3 good nursing sessions a day, plus constant "drive-by" nursing). He's not a chubby baby at all...he's very...dense, I guess.

I'm sure he's working a lot of it off because he's now walking around everywhere, and DH can eat a ton and has stayed the same pant size since high school (he's 33, lean, and his weight has only ever fluctuated by about 5lbs either way. Jerk.)

We're going in for his 1 year appointment in a few weeks and I'm planning on talking to his pedi about it again then, but I'm curious what the hive opinion is. Would you be concerned he's eating too much? And I starting to worry over nothing?

(PS--He eats more than me some days. If he continues this trend than I'm terrified about how much he'll eat when he's a teenager.)
