My chiro who I saw during my first pregnancy specialized in pregnancy and babies and he was fantastic!! I took my son when he was 3 days old (like others have said, birth can be difficult on them!!) for an adjustment. I highly recommend chiropractors although I know people who hate them too.

I'm hesitant because some chiros really are quacks, and can even kill you. (Something about hyper extending the neck repeatedly so that it damages the blood vessels which can eventually break and cause you to bleed out.) But if I researched them well, then yes, I would. I'd really like to go right now myself! Our insurance even covers some visits. If it didn't I might be less willing.

I'm not sure. Maybe? I am not anti-chiro and have found relief when traditional MDs have failed me. I'm leery for a tiny little guy to go get an adjustment but I would be open to it if there was no MD relief available.

No. Chiropractors are not medical doctors so I would not let them anywhere near my child's spine. They also tend to spew a lot of woo and anti-vaccination propaganda which makes me greatly question their judgment.

Probably not. I'm not anti-chiro, and have seen them from time to time over the years. DH on the other hand is an ER nurse and has seen multiple babies/children come through the ER with issues due to chiropractic adjustments from so called "child specialists" so now I'm too afraid something would go wrong.

Yes, I've seen two great ones in the same practice for almost 10 years. Ts legs were obviously different lengths, which was distressing my husband, we kept hearing she would grow out of it.. She had 2 adjustments, they were more like a short massage, my chiro said her hip was rotated (which is painful and happens to me). As a bonus since being adjusted she now sleeps in 9-11 hour stretches at 5 months old. I can't say it was the chiropractor but the timing was right on.

ETA they said 1x a year, 2 tops, in the future should be good.

@blackbird: Totally agree with you. I think chiros get a bad rep mainly from practicing outside their scope. I've seen a chiro in the past and I think they do have a good handle on a lot of musculoskeletal complaints.

That said, I would never take my kids to a chiro. There's no research supporting adjustments in general, much less adjustments in kids. The whole "out of alignment" thing annoys me because the research just doesn't support it. I
And I f a spine is truly "out of alignment" (ie scoliosis) cracking it and releasing CO2 isn't going to help.

Plus, I agree with @rockies11 that there are well
documented (albeit rare) risks to spinal manipulation, particularly of the cervical spine (neck).

Long story short: no thank you.

@Rockies11: Scary!
@blackbird: IF it was something I ever decided to do I would def. be very careful about who I took him to! I don't think we'll be doing it though since there isn't any overwhelming support for it from the Bee. :)
@Mrs D: We just switched to a new daycare where E is only around 2 other kids and have been illness-free for 3 weeks (longest stretch yet!) but if the frequent ear infections continue we will be doing tubes. E doesn't even get fevers so in the past the only hint we had one was less bottles during the day.

I've been taking DD since she was 4 days old. My practice specializes in pregnancy and pediatrics. The adjustments she receives are very gentle. There can be a curve in the beginning if a kiddo has some imbalances (the birthing process can be a rough one on them too!) but now DD only goes every couple months with me. I've had some chiros who charge full price for a kiddo and now my chiro just includes her adjustment with my visit. You can find a pediatric chiro here: http://icpa4kids.com/index.php

I think it's a bummer that chiros get a bad rap because it's such a part of full body health for our family and I wish other families could experience the benefits of a great chiropractor!

@josina: 5 in 5 months seems like a lot. I'd def inquire about it. DD got her tubes after her 6th infection (thats our peds rule. My DD was never fussy - we only ever knew because shed spike a fever - and the Dr always said they were "BAD" by the time we got her in. Its for sure worth asking about - the procedure took literally 5 mins and it has been amazing since. 1) have no infections and 2) how much her speech has improved!

I see one and took E to see one when she was little. I think it has a time and place, and in my experience, many chiropractors forget what their specialty is and try to pseudo practice outside of it (nutrition, pediatrics, etc etc) or discourage western medicine, which I don't like. I'm now on my third or fourth chiropractor and I've finally found one that sticks to his area of expertise :)

E needs tubes, but I am not taking her to see a chiro before they get put in. She's had 5 in 7 months...

@Mrs D: lol to the ped's comment. We have our 9 mo. check up Friday and fingers-crossed no ear infection this time (he's never fussy/upset when he has them so hard to tell!) but I'll see what he says just for curiosity.
@Smurfette: Didn't even think about having to go that often! In my mind I was thinking once or twice!
@lawbee11: We are leaning towards tubes for sure, but I was just curious if anyone else had tried a chiro. @Portboston: Wow, amazing your chiro caught the mouth ties that the dr's missed!

I took my daughter when she was 2 months old to see if we could ease her reflux. We went for a half dozen sessions, I think, to a chiro that specializes in kids and babies. I honestly don't know if it helped (she seemed to have grow out of reflux by 4 months, though she continued to spit up well until 10 months). I don't know that going to one would hurt anything, as long as they have a specialty in treating babies, so I would approach it as a "why not?" if you wanted to try it.

I take my 1 month old for cranial sacral therapy. He's had problems nursing from the beginning and held a lot of tension in his mouth and neck. We figure this was due to him being a little stuck on the way out during labor. The chiropractor seems to have helped a little bit but the most beneficial thing that she's done is catch mouth ties (tongue and lip) that 3 pediatricians and 2 lactation consultants overlooked. If nothing else, that was worth paying her for! But I do think going to her has helped relax his jaw/neck quite a bit.

Eta: I don't think I'd see a chiropractor for recurrent ear infections.

@josina: My LO had recurrent ear infections at that age. We saw an ENT and got tubes and they've been a lifesaver. Chiropractors are not medical doctors and I'm fairly certain the AAP does not recommend seeing them to treat ear infections. I found this info on the Mayo Clinic's site:

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/ear-infections/in-depth/ear-infection-treatment/art-20047613

We have a friend who is a chiro who swore he could adjust DD and improve the ear infections.

My pediatrician's exact comments were "if you want to pay a lot of money for a massage go ahead..." - I get a kick out of his bluntness.

We passed. She got tubes this past winter and it was the best decision ever. My hesitation was mostly I didnt want to get into a habit of going to the chiropractor...DH was against it from day one...

During my first pregnancy I saw a chiropractor who specialized in pregnancy and childhood chiropractics. I considered taking D, but in the end it just wasn't financially feasible for us. If I were to do it, I'd make sure the chiropractor was specialized in childhood practice.

We have a few chiro friends and we love getting adjusted. We take DS with us when we go (since we don't have family near us), and get him adjusted as well. His first adjustment was when he was a couple months old!

I haven't seen any benefits per say other than feeling good knowing everything is aligned correctly and flowing well for him. I know I feel great after an adjustment!

My little guy, 9 months, has had frequent ear infections since starting daycare (5 in 5 months). A friend of mine took her daughter (now 4) to a chiropractor when she was a baby for adjustments, that helped clear up her ear infections by allowing the fluid to drain.
I've never been to a chiro myself, and I have 2 physical therapists in the family who are very anti-chiro. but I've heard it can also help with sleep, etc.

So just curious, what is your experience with infants and chiropractors? I'd love to hear all thoughts, for/against, postives/negatives!
