@babycanuck: We have a HUGE garden, and I'm excited to have a garden this year. I have a bit of a black thumb, so it'll be work, but I think I'll get the hang of it.
We planted some things last year, but we were away for the summer so we didn't get a chance to work it. This year we'll be home, woot!
Planting;
- sunflowers
- pumpkins
- carrots
- onions
- potatoes
- tomatoes
- peppers
- beans

And we'll see what else. :)
Here's what it looked like getting ready last year.

@regberadaisy: I think they plant new plants in strawberry fields. They are always so neat and orderly, that I don't think they let the plants run amok. In your case, because you are planting in a pot the plant won't spread because there is only so much room for the runners to grow roots. There's a nice explanation here. http://www.gardenerscott.com/1/post/2012/07/how-to-propagate-strawberries.html

@SugarplumsMom: Oh no! Although, that's why I don't grow pumpkins. I know that I'd never get around to using them.

@regberadaisy: Strawberry plants aren't that big, so I don't know that you need a dwarf variety. There are trailing ones that you can put in a hanging basket that might be neat.

We're not in a financial position to work on our backyard yet so can't establish a location yet. But we miss having fresh veg too much. This year we're going to do some containers gardening.
Going to order dwarf blueberry plants, tomatoes, green beans and not sure what else. Has anyone seen dwarf strawberry plants?

Reviving an old thread to say @Mrs.Someone: you were right! The pictures I posted weren't pumpkins. The fat looking zucchini was the spaghetti squash, but the yellow ones were some sort of waxy ornamental squash. There must have been a seed mix-up. But we did get one real pumpkin and it was awesome!

Yay, its an exciting time garden-wise! We're taking it easy this year since baby is due soon.

So far, I've picked strawberries, blackberries, 1 plum, peas, and carrots. And we have a tomato or two that is ready to go! The strawberries have had bug problems this year, and I'm starting to think they just aren't worth the effort. The blackberries are just starting to ripen, and technically they're a weed! So I'm hoping to eat them before getting everything chopped down. It got too hot too fast for the peas, so sadly we didn't get many. Carrots are doing well, we pick them as needed. And the plum tree has 4 left that are ripening (dwarf tree)! Sadly, all my cherries were taken before they even ripened, boo.

@Grace: I had to build a cage to go in our raised bed to keep the birds and squirrels out. We made a frame with PVC pipe, then covered it in chicken wire.

@SugarplumsMom: I don't mean to burst your bubble, but I don't think you have pumpkins there. I think they are both some sort of summer squash. I think the yellow ones could still be spaghetti squash, and the green one is similar to zucchini. Did your plants not come marked for some reason?

I only have heirloom tomatoes and strawberries this year. My tomato plant is HUGE! I probably have 20-30 green ones right now on there, and I have 9-10 strawberries so far! :-)

@MUI831: That's awesome. Sounds like you've got a green thumb

I've started harvesting baby potatoes, and I think I could take some onions if needed. The herbs are doing really well, my tomatoes are loaded, if still green. I also think I'm getting a ton of cucumbers. But, the dang rabbits have eaten most of my peas, the broccoli, cauliflower and even a pepper plant. Any one have any tips in keeping them out? I'm hoping to avoid having to build a fence.

I just started being able to pick some veggies!!! So far we've gotten a few cucumbers, a zucchini, and green beans. I love that DS calls everything a pickle. :) I have a feeling that we're going to be getting TONS of cucumbers. We also have so many tomatoes that need to ripen. I'm starting to see the beginnings of broccoli. Our pepper plants aren't doing anything. I don't think it's been hot enough this summer. I also think I need to rethink the location of my herb garden as it's not getting as much sun as it probably needs. All in all, I'm pretty happy with how my first year of gardening is turning out!

24 July 2014 - I'm so pleased to discover that all the spaghetti squash I thought was growing are actually pumpkins! Woohoo! We're totally pumpkin/squash noobs and randomly planted them in a strip of raised flower beds by the carport. I mixed them up too, so all this time, I thought we had no pumpkins! DH had a bet with an ex-coworker on who can grow the biggest pumpkins and we thought we're out of the running! :goodluck:

@NCSUchick27: Lucky! I wish I had a long growing season. Will they give fresh tomatoes right through till fall?

It rained 2.5" this weekend. I was away and I think they have doubled in size!

@grizz: We haven't grown either at this house, but DH and his granddaddy have had a garden forever at his granddaddies house across town.. the corn is TALL but not too wide around, I think you plant it a foot apart and it will all end up touching.. so each corn stalk is roughly 1 foot wide either way but easily over 6' tall. Not much floor space.. we planted a LOT of it because you typically only get 1-2 off each plant.

Watermelon, we planted it 3' apart I believe and it's supposed to spread out and they'll all eventually be one big watermelon patch so it takes up quite a bit of space. DH has never done watermelon before so it's an experiment!

@MrsTiz: Have you grown corn and watermelon before this year? Do they take up a ton of space? I love both, but have been hesitant to plant them because I can't figure out how much space to earmark for them!

Our banana peppers are gigantic already!

I'll have to take a full garden shot but we have planted
-Banana peppers
-Bell peppers
-Hot peppers
-White corn
-Yellow corn
-Cherry tomatoes
-Regular tomatoes
-Cucumber
-Squash
-Zucchini
-Watermelon

So far we've been able to bring in some banana peppers and some smaller bells. The squash and zucchini are growing nicely but aren't big enough to bring in yet.. I think the only thing that may not be doing so hot is the regular tomatoes, but we had trouble with them last year too
