I think it's absolutely ridiculous to call dibs on a baby name (especially 6-overkill much?)! You cannot call dibs on a baby name, especially if you're not even pregnant yet. And who cares if someone else names their baby the same thing as you? Even if they are your good friend, your kids won't spend every waking hour together, possibly won't be in the same school even, and even if they grow up together, they won't be offended that their BFF has the same name. So really... What is there to get all bent out of shape about???

6 names?! That's a bit overkill. I'm personally not a fan of calling "dibs" on a name. It's a name, if you love it, use it. I personally don't think it's the end of the world if two people who know each other use the same name. My brother & cousin have the same name & everyone survived. It's a non-issue.

@autumnlove: 6 names?? That's a bit overkill! I understand if you like a boy and a girl's name very much and don't want friends to have kids by the same name, but calling dibs on 6 names is totally excessive!!

I don't think you can 'reserve' a name. If someone has their LO before you and selects that name (not applicable to family names) then it is what it is!

My SIL who isn't even married already has 1 boy and 1 girl name "reserved" lol.

I've mentally crossed those names off my list... but I didn't really like them anyway. If it had been a name I liked, I may have decided to use it anyhow.

It hasnt come up with friends, but it has with family. DH was named after his dad but has a different middle name and isn't a Junior. We wanted a Junior and I told SIL. She was very close to her dad and I knew she'd use some part of his name for her LO. I didn't necessarily call dibs, I just told her our plans and she was fine with that. Her LO has DH's first name (which is DH's dad's first name) as his middle name. We have a Junior :)

No.. but none of my good friends are in that mode yet, and we aren't TTC so it doesn't really come up!

I did mention to my SIL our future boy name because it's a family name. I knew she would think it was weird, and I'm glad she does because now she won't take it! ahah

I've talked potential names with friends and I just automatically crossed the names that they liked off of my list. No one called dibs per se but I would never ever use one of the those names.

I have a friend who wants to name her future daughter after her grandmother, so I consider that "her" name.

Another friend wants to name her future daughter the other name her parents considered for her. I think those are legit reasons to want a name and I would never use them. If I had a friend who just liked a name I would consider it fair game.

@Smurfette: I agree if its a family name that you have a bit more of a "right" to a name. But still it's a name and you can't prevent people from using it.

@Mrs. Jacks: Agree 100%!

I think calling dibs is silly, if you love a name, use it, regardless of whether others have used it or want to use it. I think it gets a bit trickier with parents' siblings as the kids will be first cousins, but beyond that, names are fair game. If we have a boy at some point, we'll most likely name him the same name DH's cousin just named their little boy (kids will be second cousins an have different last names). And funny enough, that same cousin said that if they had had a girl, she would have been named the same name as our little girl! We love that they love our little girl's name so much, and vice versa. People get so silly about names and "calling dibs" on them!

A friend has always said she wanted a girl named Reily since it was her moms maiden name. Even though she is single I couldn't use it since I know she would be upset and since it is a family name I get it.

I wouldn't call dibs on a name but I'd be disappointed if someone close to me used a name we were considering. I wouldn't care if a casual friend used the same name. And I don't know anyone who's called dibs on a name except for my sister. I am using her boy's name as a middle name if LO is a boy. But the name is after a family member who passed.

I don't believe in calling dibs on names. I figure I will choose a name because I love it deeply. If I felt like that, it wouldn't matter that a friend was going to use it. I still get goosebumps when I think of my daughters' names. That is more important than anything.

One of my friends didn't exactly call dibs on the name, but we all knew she loved the name Sean. It doesn't really matter at the time to me because we were teens, but she ended up having her Sean at 20.
