Yeah we do one or max two activities at a time, and definitely take time off in between. I think my kids would actually like to do more, but there are three of them and I can only spend so much of the week hauling them around. Also definitely choose the after school activities that are convenient! That's my first priority and honestly if an activity means a schlep I won't necessarily agree to it.

Thanks all! She certainly gets enough activity and really loves to just play with her sister when they get home. Usually that involves playing outside (even in the winter). After dance was over I just felt so relieved and so did the kids. It was such a fight to get them in the car and now it’s not. I don’t mind soccer because it’s outside and I get to hang out with my other daughter then. I’m glad we have great community education classes offered by our district.

@Becky: I think your plan sounds perfect. And the options to do yoga and Zumba at school sounds so great! No need to get back out and go somewhere else in the evening, especially when it's winter and cold and dark! ;)

I have a Kindergartener. We did soccer in April/May as a preschooler and it was great. Saturday is our last game for fall soccer and I think we are all relieved. One evening and Saturday mornings has just been a lot on top of our new school schedule and other commitments we have in the afternoon and evening. He also has speech therapy twice weekly after school so I think I was trying too hard to make sure he had "fun" activities planned during the week. I know other families may not have trouble with that, but my boy loves to have time at home to play. For winter we are going to try out a few classes for him at the gym where I work out. They are drop in so we don't have to commit and we can just do it if it works. I'm not sure if we will do soccer in the spring. We may do some swim lessons in winter or just wait until summer.

@Becky: I think your plan sounds lovely. I also have a first grader, and we are currently overscheduled with soccer (one night and Saturday morning), tennis (Saturday afternoon), and swim (Sunday morning). I can't wait until soccer is over, even though we all enjoy aspects of it (her little sister is also playing this year, so that adds to the chaos). She also has some after school stuff that doesn't involve us so I kind of forget about it (game club, running club). (Now that I've written this out I realize we may need fewer sports and more non-sport activities!)

There was a recent Outside magazine podcast episode about kids specializing in sports. Apparently for most kids it is actually detrimental to their athletic development because you learn to do different things with your body in different sports and those different skills become useful as you progress. So, your kid can probably still become an olympic gymnast even if you wait to start until next year. :silly:

@Becky: No sounds like a good plan. I’d cut back some if you wanted to. I’m not for the every sport every season keep your kids burnt out style. Let them be kids be outside like you’re doing and enjoying “ free time”. A sport here and there is great but i wouldn’t stress about getting her involved because the other kids have started earlier. Just my opinion.

After school started back my older DD, almost 6 and in first grade, was playing outside after school and having a wonderful time. I spontaneously asked her how she felt about waiting to start gymnastics until after Christmas so we could enjoy playing in the nice weather and all of the activities that come with the holidays, and said she liked the way that sounded. Recently I got information about the winter classes being offered after school and there's Zumba a yoga--for these classes they stay after for an hour, and then you pick them up, unlike gymnastics which is somewhere else, and in the evening. Now I'm wondering about doing that instead of gymnastics (the cost savings would be great too), and waiting until May to do soccer (one weeknight and then every Saturday morning) and then the summer to do a few weeks of swim.

Am I depriving her of anything? I feel like all the girls we know have been in gymnastics or dance since they were 3. She does other activities, include 4H (every other week), religious education (every Saturday), and one other activity per week (right now we have a 2 week overlap in Fall Crafts and Spanish, which are right after school so easy peasy). I'd love to wait another year to enroll her in gymnastics (this is the sport she'd like to try) but am a little concerned she'll be really far behind others. But does it matter? She's not likely going to be a professional athlete so it feels a little silly asking, but I know how it is to feel left out in not know how to do what other kids are.
