Growing up we weren't supposed to lock any doors. I locked myself in the bathroom once and couldn't get out, lol. My dad had to take the door off the hinges to get me out. And I remember once getting yelled at about using the lock on my bedroom - which I did because when the windows were open the wind would blow the door open and then slam it shut. But my parents said if there was ever fire they wouldn't be able to get me out in time.

In our house now it won't matter. All the knobs that lock have the little keys stashed at the top of the door frame.

@mrbee: Ah, that's a good idea too. Ours must be the same, we just tried to find something the right shape that would open them (and that we could keep out for the nanny in case DS locks himself in when we're not here!).

Our doorknobs can unlock from the outside of the door with the right tool (we keep a chunky screwdriver in the kitchen that works) - otherwise it would be scary! Our doors have always had the ability to open the locks from the outside (even growing up) - are you sure yours don't?

@Mrs. Sunshine: your mother would love where i live! you can't close the bathroom door tight so locking it isn't even an option :D really though, she's a wise woman, my brother had a TBI after slipping on a wet floor in a bathroom & hitting his head on a sink, water & slippery surfaces are no joke

LO is too little to even understand locking doors but regardless, we only even have one inside door that locks! So hopefully it will never be an issue.

We didn't have locks on our doors as kids and my mom said we were never allowed to lock the bathroom door if we were showering or bathing in case we fell or got hurt and someone needed to get to us. I still rarely lock it while I shower for that reason. It's a good reason.

We did not have locks on our bedroom doors and our kids will not either. We always knew better than to lock the bathroom door when my mom and dad were home. My brother was definitely a frequent offender of that rule when babysitters were over--just to taunt them.

As a nanny, this was a go-to ticked off kid move in a few of the houses I worked at.

Our son has decided that his new favorite hobby is locking himself and/or his sister in various rooms. Sometimes he will even lock the bathroom when he's not in it, and then close the door. Fun for the whole family!

If it doesn't stop soon, we'll just get some lockless doorknobs and install them - and then get some of those locks that go at the top of the door. Wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this one...
