Crashing into trees and other children is the number one cause. I don't have a sledding age child yet, but I don't know..... Moderate speeds and an inability to control your direction coupled with lots of other kids doing the same things makes me think I will helmet my kid. We helmet them when learning to ski and they are going much slower. so I guess I don't see the difference *except* I'm sure there is the pack mentality of"well no one else's kid is wearing one so it must be ok". It's a great idea and when they start going down hills maybe we will have them do it. I mean ok she hasn't been sledding yet but she'll wear her helmet. A kid got hurt pretty seriously sledding in a park near us. Feet first and helmet until she's maybe a tween/teen. In my opinion, you shouldn't have your kid sled down a hill with a fence at the end.
