My mom just started highlighting her brown hair (sorta covers up/blends in the grays) I live in metro NYC and they live in the midatlantic. The dads don't. Both have grey hair. My mom has been dying her hair since I was in middle school; my sister since high school. My dad has a beautiful thick head of black hair that is just starting to gray at 63. I'm leaving mine alone for now. I dyed my hair once or twice in college and that's it since then. My MIL dyes her hair and my FIL is bald. Its mostly white now. She also wears it very short. My MIL has hers coloured and has her roots done regularly. But it looks nice on her - a soft silver almost. My MIL does, my dad is just getting more grays mixed into his dark hair now. My dad doesn't dye his hair, but it's barely gray at all. My MIL doesn't dye her hair, which has been gray and is now turning white. My dad does nothing about it but keeps his hair short and it blends in. When I was a kid, I asked my mom why my grandma had gray hair and my grandpa didn't, despite being the same age. My mom told me it was the kind of shampoo my Grandma used..... I totally accepted that explanation until I was like 14 or 15, when I went to ask my Grandma which shampoo it was, and then I finally realized that wasn't it.... My dad is only just starting to get some grays in his dark hair recently and he is 65. My mom definitely has some grays but not a ton- good genetics in that respect! FIL is gray. My mom went completely gray before 30, so she's been dying hers for 20+ years. She was a hair stylist for years and does it herself. My grandma and my grandpa's wife both dye theirs as well. As for the women, they all still have black hair - no comment on whether it's natural or dyed! I never really thought about this stuff before - but where I live now, nobody dyes their hair. So you see lots of people in their 20s and 30s with salt-and-pepper hair! So dyeing hair is definitely unusual here. Do your parents (and in-laws) dye their hair?
