My parents have a key, but they live four hours away and they wouldn’t use it unless invited (like, when I know they’re coming over and they’ll arrive before I get home). My in-laws live in England so it isn’t an issue.

My parents are in the access list for our apartment. They can get a key from the door man. It's mostly helpful because we only have 3 keys and it's a juggle when they visit, but this way the can get a 4th key. They also often arrive late and can let themselves in without waking us up. They live far away so they would not stop by without me expecting them.

Aw man, like 4 people have the key to our house, lol. My parents have a key (in case of emergency; they live less than a mile away), our neighbors (my high school BFF) have a key in case we lock ourselves out, my BIL has a key (he comes over pretty often to hang out with my DH during the day before his overnight shift; he's allowed over whenever he wants, so if DH and DD are upstairs napping he'll let himself in and watch some TV. All parties are 100% fine with this), and my ILs have a key as they watched DD before DH left his job to stay home ( and they still come over when he's not feeling well).

We're very very lucky that everyone is super respectful! It's honestly super convenient for us, but it would never work if everyone wasn't on the same page with expectations.

My sister has a key to our house, but that's because she takes care of our animals while out of town and sometimes drops her dog off at our house if she has to work a long day.

My mom & dad live over an hour away, and they have the garage code for if they get into town before we make it home.

My in-laws used to have the garage code to our house, but then we changed it and didn't tell them due to being no contact and my FIL is crazy. I didn't want them to have it to start out with because they would invite themselves over all the time and just walk in.

My parents (who live out of state) and sister (20 mins away) both have the access code to our house, we don't have a traditional key. My sister has it so it's easier for her to get in when she comes over, she only comes when we are expecting her. It's handy for my parents to have so they can let themselves in whenever they are here if we aren't with them. My IL's are in the area but do not have the code as I wouldn't want them to just drop by and let themselves in.

My parents have the code to get in. My dad regularly watches our girls and also watches our dog when we're out of town so it's very helpful for him to have the code. Also, I have absolutely no concerns of it being abused, etc.

Yup. They watch our kids so that’s a big one, but they’ll also stop by to drop things off. And we’re pretty big on popping in unannounced (I appareciate the diversion for my kids). The only privacy issue I could foresee would be if my husband and I were alone in the middle of the day and taking advantage of it but that has happened once ever in our 4.5 years as parents so I’m not concerned. They don’t usually knock, and we don’t either when we go to their houses. This also extends to siblings/siblings in law.

We have a door code, which my parents have. They live close by, and they do stop by occasionally while we are out to drop off/pick stuff up. When they are coming over and we are home, they always knock and wait for us to let them in.

My mom and brother have keys, I think. I also have keys to my brother’s and the code to my mom’s. We’re pretty private people and none of us would use it without asking, but since my brother and I live 45m apart and my mom often comes and watches the kids from out of town it has been useful every now and then. My in laws no, because they also live out of town and come to visit not to babysit :silly:

Haha, old thread, old answer!

We don't have keys, but we have a key pad at our house currently. My parents have their own code and my dad has a fingerprint scan at our garage door. They live in town and we have never had an issue with them abusing it.

My parents don’t, they live about 4 hours away and rarely visit so it wouldn’t make sense. My husbands parents do, they live about 5 minutes up the road. They would never just ‘use’ the keys to enter our house, but there have been circumstances where we’ve been held up and they came to care for our dog.

@Not Sure About Anything: what do they want a set for? When you say your dad would use it, you mean he would go into the house when you’re not there without asking?
I would just say you’d rather give them a key when necessary, like if you go out of town and need them to watch kids or something.
They can’t make you do something you don’t want to do...I wouldn’t make a big stink, I’d just say “nah, I don’t think it’s necessary. I’d rather have the only set of keys.” And just leave it at that.

To answer the OP, helllllll no. My parents live a plane ride away. My MIL has no boundaries.

Yep, my parents have a set of keys even though they live 3 hours away. It has come in handy though for when they come to visit and DH are running late or stuck in traffic. They never just come unannounced. It is always a planned trip and they let us know if they are going to let themselves in.
