I just looked into it because of this thread but I don't think it makes sense for us right now. It looks like they all exclude pre-existing conditions and the cost for my dog through Healthy Paws or ASPCA is around $400 a year and it won't cover the preventative stuff and Banfield doesn't cover the big stuff. Last year we spent around $700 at the vet and this year will probably be $400 if nothing else major crops up.

We probably should have gotten it for our dog when she was a pup because she's since been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. I don't know if we can get it now or if she would be ruled out for a pre-existing condition.

Just an FYI (I used to be a practice manager at a Banfield)- the Banfield plans are different from actual pet insurance, they are more of a wellness/preventative medicine plan. They are still a great thing to have to take care of things like vaccines, lab work, and dentals and/or the initial puppy necessities (shots and spay/neuter), but if your pet has an emergency the diagnostics/surgery may not be covered if you have used the allowances on your plan up already for the year, and things that go beyond that are out of pocket (but discounted).

We do, it has saved us many a time for our not 18 month old Great Dane. I think it may depend on the breed on whether it pays off or not?!

We just insured our 2 cats, our new little kitten came with a 6 week free insurance trial and during that time she had to go to the emergency vet for a fever of unknown origin, and was on antibiotics and a saline drip for 3 days. It would have cost us $1100 but luckily we got away with a $150 deductible! Once that happened we decided to extend her coverage and cover our older cat as well. He is a string/ribbon eater from way back and we've had to have his stomach pumped more times than I'd care to admit, at about $200/$300 a time. Insurance is pricey but I think probably worth it when you have mischievous pets like ours!

We don't. The only reason I would get it is for a puppy (to cover neutering/spaying primarily). We only take our dog for yearly vaccinations.

I just cancelled ours. It was over $50 a month for one dog and we haven't used it in years. Fingers crossed she stays safe and healthy!!

Yes for our dog (a Newfoundland). She had a recurring UTI as a puppy so once she was healthy we got her insurance. We don't have it for our cat because we rarely ever take him to the vet.

I did when he was living with us. So worth it! We did the one through Banfield also. Now that he lives with my parents, they don't.

I just looked up the banfield wellness plan, and it looks like for my area and dental coverage (they have three plan levels now), it would be $456/year per dog. It is pretty cool that they cover so much though. Kind of like paying your vet bill in advance :).

yes! Though I have a policy that just covers emergencies, not routine stuff like it sounds you have :). Jealous of the dental coverage!

We have Healthy Paws. It's such a relief not to have to worry about high vet bills when you have an emergency.

@BananaPancakes: Def worth it! We pay $300 total a year (paid monthly auto-charge) it covers all of their office visits, vaccines, overnight stays as necessary, dental cleaning, bloodwork, fecal/urine testing, 10% off medicine if necesssary, etc. etc. etc. the dental work alone is $300+ (they're put under) so I think we win in the end!

We don't currently, but I've been meaning to look into it. Our dog is almost 8, so I'm not sure what all it includes at this point. But we just had a friend drop $6K to save her chihuahua, so it's fresh in my mind.

We go to the Banfield chain at Petsmart. Had them both on it when they were puppies, then took them off and paid out of pocket. I found out earlier this year that dental was included and put them both back on :) BEST DECISION ever!!! (found a polyp during routine cleaning and had a cancer scare with our beagle terrier!)

My mom says she wishes she was one of our dogs ;) (jokingly of course).
