My younger one used to be asleep when I'd bring my older one into their room but now at almost 4 and almost 2 they go to bed at the same time (7:30-8pm)

@winniebee: maybe he's just not at the most flexible age rather than being too young? Terrible twos and all. 🙁

@rattles: I seem to remember a few incidents with DS1 around this age when he refused to sleep. It's a little fuzzy but kind of coming back to me now! My kids are also adamant about room sharing now 🙄

@winniebee: nooooo! I'm so sorry. I'm wondering the same about age/maturity. (DD2 is only a few weeks older than R.) We're talking about splitting them up again, but they both cried and said they didn't want to separate. It's a mess. In the interim, I'm putting the nursery in our guest room instead of C's old room just in case this doesn't work out. I hope your boys adjust soon. :bummed:

@rattles: we had a night from hell last night - night 5. Toddler only slept 9-1040 then up until 1 am. And up for the day at 6. I'm wondering if he is too young for all of this. (28m)

Yes, 5 and 3 and we have them in bed by 8. The 5-year-old is exhausted from school so falls asleep easily. The 3-year-old sometimes takes longer because he still naps some days, but he usually doesn't hold out too long when bro is already snoozing. They are both up at 6:30 on school days. I may get 7 or 7:15 on weekends.

Everyone gets pjs on and ready for bed together. Then, most nights, DD2 gets tucked in (730ish) and DD1 comes down and helps make lunches and either reads or plays a game with us. She goes to bed 8ish.

We have done bedtime at the same time on the nights when (for whatever reason...an outing, guests, etc) they are going to bed late (8-830ish). But I think that means they are both tired, especially DD2, so there aren't usually much in the way of shenanigans!

They are also in bunkbeds so can't actually see each other. Maybe that helps?!

My newly turned 3 year old decided several months ago he wanted to sleep with his older brother (5.5 years old) in the same bed. My 3 year old definitely goes to bed later than he should but we can't get them to fall asleep earlier. On average it is in between 9-9:30 when they fall asleep. We have to drag them out of bed at 6:15 and it's not pretty.

They're the same age, so they have the same routine and bedtime, although B usually falls asleep 30-45 min earlier than A. She's been fighting bedtime lately, so he gets into bed while we continue telling stories/singing/begging A to just get in bed and stay there.

@winniebee: they're getting up at the same time as usual, around 6:30-7am.

ETA: I'm optimistic you'll have a better experience. When I posted asking how long it took everyone else's kids to adjust, the answers were all in days.

@rattles: ughhhh do they sleep in at least? I don't really care how late they fall asleep if they are in their room....but the 5:30 waking is making for a CRABBY toddler.

All I can say is I hope you have better luck than I have! We combined ours into the same room about a month ago, and I can count on one hand the number of times that they've fallen asleep before 10pm since. Before, they were going to sleep happily around 8pm. They have the same bedtime, but it didn't seem to matter when I've tried staggering because I can't stagger it far enough for the younger to fall asleep. I've always done their bedtime routine together, so the shared sleep space is all that's new.

@winniebee: same bedtime routine and same bedtime. Sometimes I let my four year old stay up later. She is also first to rise usually, but since lo2 naps it isn't a huge deal if she wakes him up. Sometimes I hear giggling but lo2 is usually really ready for sleep and knocks out quicker than lo1. One thing we did was make sure their heads don't face each other. It's somewhat of an L shape. Maybe more like a T? I don't know, you have to figure out what works with their particular room. But I think that has helped.

@Mrs. Turtle: see the younger one used to be easy to put to bed. I did the boys' routine together and then would throw the younger one in his crib and then go read/cuddle etc with the older for 15-20 mins. Now it's all screwed up!

Same exact bedtime and routine. There's no way I could do it alone otherwise. Of course ours started younger (around 12 and 14 months, I think) and are closer in age. But so far they don't do much chatting or keeping each other awake.

I thought we would be sticking to the same bed times for our kids once they began room sharing. DS2 is supposed to go to bed by 8 and DS1 goes to bed by 8:30. So, I envisioned staggering the bed times once they were room sharing. But, now they demand to go to bed at the same time -- which results in BOTH of them going to sleep later! They keep each other a little at night by talking, laughing, etc. It's cute, but man, 8:45 is way too late for DS2....and now it's too late for DS1 because he's waking up early with his brother.

Do you think it will level off and they will adjust to new bed times? Or are we doomed with sleep deprived children? (it's only been 3 nights).
