@Mrs. Jacks: Cute story!! :)

My parents didn't use time outs (they spanked). Not sure what we plan on doing, but we'll likely use time outs since we don't plan on spanking

Timeouts don't work yet, my son doesn't get the concept that he has to sit somewhere for a designated amount of time, but we'll see as he gets older.

My parents did time outs in that we had to kneel facing a wall for a set amount of time. I remember my sister and I being in time out together and falling asleep and hitting our head against the wall. We also got spanked. Didn't like that and won't do it to our kids. I started time outs with my 3-year-old when he was 18-months in his pnp until he figured out how to stay in one spot. It works for us even if he's in his impossible 3s right now. It at least helps calm him down and reset.

@Mrs. Jacks: DD has started doing this, too! I figured part of it was her working through the process in order to understand what a time is/what it is for. We only do timeouts for "serious" offenses (in our house, that means hitting and doing something unsafe after being told not to). The other day DD got mad, hit the sofa, and put herself in timeout. :) Then, she went over, appologized to the sofa and called it, "poor honey." Lol!

@Mrs. Jacks: I used to do this too! One year at Thanksgiving I was being really annoying and swinging the doors between our kitchen and dining room. Dad told me if I touched the door again I was going in time out. So I totally tried to sneak one finger on the door behind my back. He busted me and sent me to time out. Well. When time out was over apparently I decided that if I was going to do the time I was going to really do the crime. So I went over and smacked the crap out of the door and then marched myself right back to time out. Dad said I looked him dead in the eye with an expression that said "that was totally worth it!".

I don't know how they dealt with my antics : )

my parents didn't use timeouts, but i was once a camp counselor and got very frustrated with one of the campers (he called me a bitch) and i asked him to sit in a timeout. i have to say, it gave us both the opportunity to calm down--i talked to him afterwards calmly and we both let it go. come to think of it, i could probably use some timeouts for myself when i start to get upset!

I would TO first over spanking. I teach MS kids and kids can still get swats in Texas. I "sort of" use time out as a calm down/cool down procedure and I totally think it works. Usually, they just need a few minutes to settle down and think about what they did (just like LO's) and they are fine.

It's definitely a technique we plan to utilize. I don't recall being put in timeouts as a child, but then again I rarely misbehaved.

I don't think that was a "thing" when I was a kid, so I got yelled at, sent to my room or spanked occasionally (overall I think I was a pretty good kid though).

My stepson gets time outs and it really helps to remove him from whatever the situation is and to talk it out after. If he keeps doing X that got in him trouble, then we'll take away toys, or now that he's old enough, he'll get grounded from certain activities. If we're visiting friends and he pushes it far enough too many times, we go home.

We'll definitely do the same with our LO.

Timeouts are great. Sometimes Lala will do something wrong these days and will put herself into time out. The other day she was at a friend's house and I asked her not to throw the playdough. She looked at me, threw the playdough, got up, went to the corner and then announced to her friend, "I'm in time out because I threw the playdough and mama told me not to." Then she hopped up, said, "Sorry mama!" and went back to playing. Everyone in the room laughed and I was pleased to see that she knows when she is too worked up and gave herself the needed break.

Yep, I sure will. We used to have to stand in the corner, I remember it was the corner of the dining room and it was awful. there is a running joke in my family because when my cousins came to visit and stay with us, my dad (it was his brothers sons) would say, "There are no corners at Uncle Tim's house" so they never had to be put in the corner while they were on vacation/visiting us. To this day (my cousin is now in his early 20's) he still jokes that there are no corners at my parents house!

Oh, yes. I've used them a few times on kids I've watched and it works like a charm. Three minutes having to sit on a stair is torture for a three-year old! Plus, if I remember my high school child care course, a timeout removes the child from the stimulus that is making them misbehave and then you can start fresh. Seems to work.
