I witnessed a drowning at our family's lakehouse which is located on a small and calm lake. It made me totally paranoid and now I'm really nervous about taking LO in the water when we're not in a small pool surrounded by lifeguards. I'd definitely let DH take him in but I'm not sure about babysitters or other relatives. I'd have to be there for the first few times.

I also wish I was a stronger swimming myself.

Nope. I lifeguarded for years and am a water safety nut and wouldn't let anyone else take them unless I'd previously been and seen how much attention they paid.

@Cole: very true! This beach is a very small local lake that is probably not even 100' of shoreline (trees/woods on either side), not busy, and fairly shallow. Plus it has a nice size playground area up the hill away from the lake. It's really the only lake we take J to in the summer. But this will be the first time that he goes to the lake without me or DH.

DH is taking him to the ocean in NY this summer - obviously that's huge with tons of people - but DH is a helicopter parent so I am not worried a bit!

I'm not really sure...I personally know 3 people that have drowned, so I am all too familiar with the fact that something can happen even with a confident swimmer, and that drowning is not the big yelling/flailing sort of episode most people imagine it to be, so you literally have to have your eyes on them at ALL times. This is something where it would really be on a case-by-case basis for me. Like, if it was my SIL who is a swim coach and used to be a lifeguard, sure thing. But my easily distracted brother? Not in a million years. Although having my mom there would make no difference to me, because she can't swim!

I think it would depend on the beach. I initially pictured the beach I grew up going to and even after ten years as a nanny and knowing it well I wouldn't want to take my own child by myself. But then I pictured other beaches, some of which I have taken nanny kids to and I wouldn't think twice about sending the on their way. Big waves, strong under tow, super crowded, lack of restrooms, lots of waking are all things that would make me think twice though.

@Foodnerd81: I used to be a nanny for a few different families and this was never a problem for them! I obviously didn't realize at the time how much trust they must have had in me. But I became a mom - and now I know. You don't let just anyone watch you kid - and especially take them somewhere like the beach.

Just in general, I wouldn't. I get really nervous when I'm not the one there with them in basically any situation. The beach without me would probably give me a panic attack!

With my mom, or my sisters, I guess so. Just a regular babysitter, no. I have no experience with a nanny-- someone I know really well and trust day in and day out-- so I don't know how I'd feel about that.

Until J starts daycare in the fall, my teenage brother is his "nanny". My mom text me and asked if he can take J to the beach tomorrow. My mom and sister will be there, so I said yes. But I asked mom to drill it into my brother's head how important it is to watch him closely.

I've read so many drowning stories friends post on FB lately that I feel more sensitive to the issue than I did last year. J is pretty fearless in the water too. But since there will be several adults and it's my family, I'm not worried.

Is this something you're okay with?
