@Aimed: oh, okay -- it sounded like it might have been a sort of intermediate step before getting to a full-on helmet. Thanks for the explanation!

@PurplePeony: a doc band is a brand of helmet. We actually used hangar brand as they were the only ones in our area. There is no real difference between the brands, the quality depends on the technician who adjusts the helmet as the treatment progresses.

Our LO has torticollis and a tilt issue which we went to pt for a few times. The stretching helped and his neck is not as tight but the resulting positional plagiocephaly didn't resolve so we ended choosing to get the DOC band. He's 7 months and we actually had our fit appointment today. It went well, he didn't seem bothered by it though did get quite sweaty for the time he was in it at the clinic. They told us to ease him into it so wear for 3-4 hrs and then take off to see if there is redness. I'm hopeful that he will adjust fine when we start tomorrow (fingers crossed!). We are thinking about decorating it so it looks a bit more cheerful and less medical.

@PurplePeony: my dd has the same thing. We are doing pt but I've heard chiropractic might be more useful. Has anyone heard about or tried that?

@Lozza: @Aimed: what is a doc band? My DD has mild torticollis which has led to a bit of positional plagiocephaly, and we just had a PT appointment for her a couple days ago. Right now, we're just doing stretches and trying to keep her off the side she favors as much as possible, since she's only 4.5 months so her head is still in the really malleable stage. We go back in a month to see if more intervention is necessary, so I'm interested to know what we could be in for -- I've only ever heard of the helmets and had no idea there was some other device (I'm assuming this isn't a helmet).

Our LO had to wear a doc band last summer and I was so worried but it all worked out great! You will gradullay ramp up the wearing of it so he will get used to it and after a while he won't even notice it!
The biggest tip I have is to make sure to clean it every night during bath time and wash LO's hair well as it get sweaty in there. Our tech advised cleaning it wirh mustela cleaning solution instead of the alcohol - it worked well and was less hassle than the alcohol solution thing!
I too was worried about others reactions - I probably got some side eyes but I didn't even notice them but every.single.time I went to Target I had someone stop me to say that their LO had had one and it worked great - I found people to be super supportive actually - I hope that you have the same experience! Best of luck, it is a pain for sure but it will be worth it in the end.

So, LO has an asymmetric head (moderate positional plagiocephaly). It's not dramatic, but I definitely notice it, and because it does affect his facial symmetry/features (and not just the back of his head), we've decided to do the DOC band treatment in the hopes of evening him out. We're also doing some physical therapy/stretching for neck tightness.
Anyone have any tips on how to make the process go more smoothly? I'm worried that since he'll have it over the summer it'll get all sweaty and gross. I'm also worried about how it will affect his sleep because he's kind of a terrible sleeper to begin with (though he's otherwise a super easy baby). Also, I'm sure we'll get a lot of stares/questions when we're out with him... anyone have a good standard response to "what's up with your kid?"

Any other tips/suggestions from those who've been through this much appreciated!

I added a gratuitous baby picture for fun. He's 6 months old. :)
