Wow, interesting! I wonder if the weight gained before pregnancy and after breastfeeding counts? Because technically I've lost both of my pregnancy weights for both pregnancies. But I'm still 20 lbs over what I used to be. Not overweight, but not my ideal weight.

@pastemoo: haha, oops, me neither! I was so surprised by the comment made by a doctor to a thin woman who exercises and watches what she eats that I too quick to respond :)

@Mrs. Stroller: She lost the weight! (By 8 months, which I think is better for you anyway). And I agree, some weight is milk and related reserves for making milk. I didn't realize the thread was 2 months old when I revived it--oops!

I think you need a new doctor. Seriously. Breastfeeding moms often keep an extra 10 pounds on until they wean. The only reason you'll be overweight later in life is if you are sedentary and make poor nutrition choices. Period.

@rachiecakes: Congrats!! I'm 5.5 months PP and still have about 5 LBS to go before I hit pre-pregnancy weight... but I was about 10 LBS over my ideal weight when I got pregnant so I guess it's a total of 15 to go. I feel like I'm waaaay hungrier now that I'm breastfeeding than when I was pregnant.

I really hope this extra weight comes off :( It's weird, I actually lost ALL plus some extra weight during the first two weeks after delivery, but gained about 10 LBS back after that.

Wow I did not know that. How does it work if youve had two completely different pregnancies.

My first I gained 30 and never was able to get rid of the last 5 lbs. second time around I gained 12 lbs and am now 20 lbs under my pre pregnancy weight. Does that mean I'll be skinny ?! Hehe. (now i'm currently 172 lbs and 5' 4 3/4

@rachiecakes: :) Me neither--I was sooo good, but my body just "wanted" to gain that darn weight. ugh. But you did it right--and I need to be patient and careful with myself!
It's funny because my clinic was so hard on me with the weight gain, but then very easy on me with the weight loss (asking me to keep it slow, and no more than 1-2 lbs/week now).

@pastemoo: yes! I was staaarrrrving when I was first breastfeeding. More hungry than I ever was pregnant and was always dying of thirst - like had to pull over when driving to get a drink. I still get super thirsty.

I was really good while pregnant. I'm a vegetarian and am really health-conscious. I took my prenatals, I ate healthy meals when I was hungry and didn't feel guilty when I had dessert. I could only work out for so long before my blood pressure got out of control. I definitely felt like my skin was going to explode from the swelling at the very end (I developed pre-e and pitting edema went with it) and know that being on bedrest did no good as far as gaining weight is concerned. I actually only got a few tiny stretchmarks on the very top of one leg at week 38. I absolutely did not just sit back and eat cake for 9 months, lol

Just read that link from above:
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/6114200/ns/today-today_health/t/speed-counts-losing-post-pregnancy-weight/#.UCVm9KDAHU1
This article is so wrong! Breastmilk is 1-10% fat, not 50% fat. And I was told to eat more now than when I was pregnant (an extra 500-1000 calories of my pre-pregnancy normal). Though my weight loss is slow, it is still going.
(Yes I gained more than the recommended 25-35 pounds. Yes they recommend 25-35 pounds, not 20-25 pounds.)
My clinic also told me that too-rapid post partum weight loss beyond that awesome loss in the first 1-2 weeks can seriously deplete mama's calcium and she won't notice the effects until years down the line.

So... @rachiecakes, very glad you took your time and are happy and pre-pregnancy weight now at 8 months and didn't push your body too hard too soon. :)

Based upon your BMI at your current weight you are in the normal category so I'd suggest talking with your doctor about this statement. Perhaps they didn't expect you to take the weight off like you have.

As for sizes, I have a friend who returned to her pre-pregnancy weight but was not able to go back to her pre-pregnancy size because as she put it "everything shifted"

First off, like the PPs said, 133 is great at your height, and the standard wisdom is you have 9 months to get there and 9 months to get back.... and then some bf-ing moms can't lose the last 10 until they wean LO. Looks like you did great so far!

Your doctor is off base saying that to you when you are fine. Maybe if you started off heavy, it would be a good idea to lose the rest of the weight, but you are doing great already.

ETA: I also had a lot of pressure at the checkups about my weight, and it was really frustrating. I wouldn't change doctors though. You can always say something to her about it.

@Mrs. Jacks: when she said it it was just kind of a small "oh by the way" thing - but I certainly won't forget it. All the pressure is coming from me. I won't change docs and she's only my OB, not primary care physician.

While I was pregnant no one EVER said anything about my weight gain and I was always asking/horrified at every visit. Maybe because I was on strict bed rest and there wasn't much of anything I could do?

My doctor told me to watch my weight gain while pregnant, that it's not a reason to just eat empty calories willy nilly and then expect to properly nourish the baby and lose it quickly later. He also said that I should start physical activity when I felt ready and that this changes from person to person, birth to birth, but if I wasn't feeling up to exercise at 6 months pp to come back for a visit. There could be other issues at play, I suppose.

This stuff isn't an exact science, so I take everything with a grain of salt. Good luck, you're doing great!

@rachiecakes: wow I'm appalled, I understand perhaps statistically that may be true like mrsbee said, but how Insensitive for him to say that! I would keep doing what you're doing and not focus on it. I'm three months post partum and still have 20 lbs to lose. I am doing everything I can but I hben't lost a pound in 8 weeks. So I would never let someone tell me that I will remain overweight!

@Mrs. Bee: I didn't know it was only 20-25 lbs, my midwife never seemed concerned with my weight gain and it was about 35 lbs

But you aren't overweight now! Your not even on the edge. Plus, a size 4 is so slim! It might not be what it was, but it's certainly not unhealthy.
