@Mrs. Tiger: :bummed: that stinks but at least they were honest with you and you don't have to make a switch and have the same thing happen. But that really stinks. You have enough to do every day without having to remind them to do their jobs!!

@jhd: @blackbird: @catomd00: @MtnBiker: just checked with D's regular pediatrician, who said it's likely that any other practice would be just as terrible at communication, plus they'd be starting on his case from scratch. I guess I just need to be ready to hound them for everything and be /that/ parent. Oh well!

@Mrs. Tiger: At 3 weeks postpartum and still in the fog, I'm so glad he took over that appointment. We're slowly learning how to effectively communicate with LO's doctor team but I feel like I have to do a lot of leg work between the different offices. I think you'd be completely justified in leaving if you found another practice you are comfortable with. Communication is critical to success in everything.

Communication is really important in healthcare, especially when dealing with complicated or chronic issues. I would look for a new practice if feasible and you are comfortable with the knowledge and skill level with this condition of another physician.

@Mrs. Tiger: yeah I would definitely start exploring in that case, just so you won't be forced to make a quick change. :bummed: that really stinks though!

@Truth Bombs: yup, we would have shown up in Sept and they would have made me feel like crap for ignoring his needs or something :bummed:

@jhd: ugh how annoying! I feel your pain. These same GI docs made us wait 3 weeks to get his broviac out after it was already unused for 4 weeks. I think it's time to explore new options, not necessarily commit but explore...

@Mrs. Tiger: oh my! this makes me so upset for you! if his meds need changed there is no excuse for not getting in touch with you. i hope the next appointment goes well.

this is not on the same level, but we've been waiting for a sedated ABR to test T's hearing. we had been going to the hearing clinic associated with our ENT practice. well they recently got new audiologists and they didn't have hospital privileges but said they were working on it. a month passes so i call to follow up and the woman i called was polite but kind of like "don't call me, i'll call you when it's set up" another few weeks pass and finally our SLP insisted i call them back and get them to do something. i got a referral to an audiology clinic connected to one of the local universities instead of waiting on their staff. they did such a great job with LO and they even did the ABR in the office without sedation--which i wasn't even offered at the other place. i was happy to have the audiologist and ENT connected since no other parts of T's care are, but we will be continuing to see the new audiologist and deal with any additional paperwork. it just makes me mad that they said it needed to be done immediately but made no effort to get us a referral somewhere else until i got upset and pushed them for it. lesson for me i guess. sorry for the novel!

@Mrs. Tiger: If they were unresponsive and it turned out no changes needed to be made, I would be annoyed, but give them the benefit of the doubt. The fact that you had to hound them to find out that he needed changes made to his care would be a huge issue for me. If I don't hear from my doctor I usually assume that means all is well and no follow up is needed. Good thing you didn't take that position since it sounds like you wouldn't have ever heard from these people!

@MtnBiker: good for your DH! Mine has played bad cop a few times also, and it's so helpful.

I had this problem with my own doctor! I had labs done about a year after J was born. I received a letter in the mail, three months later with the results coming back as 'abnormal' and that I would need a follow up appointment.
I made an appointment with someone else.

I feel for you, DH refused to leave our first specialist appointment without the doctors checking out our LO more detail, he as a cleft lip and at the time we were unsure of the palate. I'm glad he was there to be stubborn (literally would not leave the room), but we practically had to beg them to check LO's palate, and while jury is still out on the severity - there definitely is a notch of some type in the palate.

That is crazy! I would be furious!

It's so hard though because you obviously want him to be with people who have experience treating short gut kids. I guess for me it would depend how good / experienced your next option of providers are.

Obviously you want to advocate for your child - but it should NOT be your responsibility to coordinate his care to that level. It seems like they dropped the ball repeatedly.

I'm so annoyed although I've ultimately solved the problem (for the nearterm). D's bili levels were elevated in the last labs he got taken at IVIG, which that doc then faxed to his GI team (which he last saw in early June). They were totally unresponsive, I called, left messages, and emailed everyone I had contact info for multiple times over two weeks, asking for them to look at the labs or schedule us for an appt, no response.

I finally sent an email this morning saying that this is my last attempt to contact them and if I don't get a response I'll take D somewhere else. They're supposedly the best (for short gut kids) but I'm sure other groups have good docs too.

Lo and behold I get email responses from two different team members, and four voicemails. They changed his meds based on the labs, asked him to come in for new labs next week, and scheduled him a next appt sooner (it was in Sept, now early August).

I'm glad they're paying attention to me now but seriously, so annoying! If they give me any crap about losing my cool or aoemthing when I see them, I'm done.

Does this happen to you guys? Would you consider leaving a specialized practice for poor communication skills?
