I'm not a doctor or nurse but my parents bought a new construction house when my sister was 6 months old, it just so happened to be built on a swamp - their house was entirely moldy. My sister was extremely sick by 18 months, constantly. Mold is serious!!!

@autumnlove: it cost me $49 to cover one main duct, one return vent, one dryer vent, unlimited supply vents. Little did I know that we have two main ducts (which has like 4 parts, only one is covered), two return vents... So I have to pay an additional like $420, but he said he will give me the sanitizer for free, which is $120. I was like so how much is the coupon worth? Cuz it said valued $375. The guy said $250. He also said we are supposed to do it every 2 years! Expensive! But he said it is necessary... Like changing oil in a car. I have heard that before.... If u don't maintain the units, will break down faster. Who knows, right?

Here's a paper that looks at young children with mold in their home and increased upper respiratory infections. There's surprisingly little research on young children and allergy-like responses but I guess babies are hard to study in general.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2233943/#!po=34.6154

They found that mold was more associated with upper respiratory infections early on than cigarette smoke. Maybe print that out and give it to him. On the other hand I couldn't find any literature to support his assertion. Though I guess with mold it's not necessarily an allergy since it produces actual toxins.

@pelikila: and we did our allergy testing at a year and it was definitive. I'll send kids for allergy testing any time after a year without hesitation.

Kids can (and do) develop allergies before the age of 2; however, usually they don't like testing them before the age of 2 because their immune system is still developing so the results before the age of 2 have more of a tendency to change as compared to after the age of 2. (I'm no doctor, this is just what I've understood from all that we've gone through so far.) Our pediatric allergist went ahead and recommended allergy testing (skin and blood) for C when he was 18 months due to the issues we were having. Of course he cautioned us that the results could still change but at least we could rule some major concerns out.

@tequiero21: The magical number 2 comes from seasonal allergies, not constant exposures. So usually kids need a full season exposed to a certain type of pollen for a full season to develop the proper immunologic response. Then the next season they show allergy symptoms. That doesn't apply to constant exposures. Residents are still learners, so I wouldn't expect him to be fully knowledgable about this stuff... Especially if he hasn't done an allergy and immunology rotation (which most people never take).

@tequiero21: I only briefly looked into it and it seemed really complicated to get a landlord to take care of it. When we came back from our honeymoon I had the biggest reaction I ever had, the landlord claimed he had it inspected and they found nothing. Well we ended up pulling up the kitchen floor ourselves because that's where I'd end up breaking out and there were huge piles of black mold. He was full of crap but it did seem more complicated to take him to court. We did deduct the supplies for redoing the floor (but not our labor costs) out of rent and he didn't complain about that - it looked much nicer afterwards and we got a good deal on supplies so he really didn't have anything to complain about.

@T.H.O.U.: ugh, me too. we haven't had it cleaned. we set the date for first friday in sept. they just gave me an estimate.

@Maysprout: yeah, that's what i think. just dealing with him on a personal level, i'd never send my kid to him. seriously. and why is 2 the magic number? cuz kids have allergic reactions to food earlier than that. why can you be allergic to food earlier and not to mold or dust? yeah, we don't want them in the air so we're just going to foot the bill. i'd love to take him to court and sue him for it lol but i guess that's just a waste of my time and energy.

Sounds gross, I have mold allergies and didn't know about it until I started renting houses that weren't maintained. I'm not a Dr or nurse but sounds like the guy is full of shit. I did get my PhD in an immunology field though and never heard of a magical 2 year old age where children can't be sensitive before then. Mold can put off plenty of toxins that would mess with breathing if they're in the air.

I have heard also that they dont' really develop allergies until they are 2 but that doens't mean dust and mold doesn't bother them.

I'm glad you got your house clean, hopefully it helps cut down the dust. We have a really bad issue with that too.

so i decided to get the air ducts cleaned in this house. not sure how old the system is but it's never been cleaned. so the air ducts are nasty dusty and rusty and there's mold growing in the a/c unit, since the mold acts as a sponge. gross! we've been breathing this crap for a year. i knew the house was nasty dusty cuz we'd vacuum and it will fill our dyson with nastiness. and then if we vacuum the next day, fills up with dust again. anyway, the landlord won't pay for the cleaning so even though i think he's 100% liable, we're going to just pay for it for the sake of our kids. anyways, they are always having runny noses. and sometimes, they just cough a lot if they exert too much energy. i swear it's the dusty mold! the landlord is a pediatric resident and he says kids get upper respiratory infections 8-10 times a year and don't develop allergies until like 2 or so. my kids are a year and a half. i don't think he's the brightest tool in the shed, so i don't take his word for it. what do you think? waiting for a call from my ped.
