@rahlyrah: you're right! I guess I was thinking babywearing to satisfy the need to get other things done. But for pumping and showering just read my other comment :P

one of the most helpful things I remember hearing was I think from happiest baby on the block, it went something like "newborns are like fire alarms--they go off at the same volume whether it's a burnt piece of toast or whether the house is up in flames." Made me feel a little better when I knew his needs were met but I had to use the bathroom or swallow some food quickly or just have two minutes to myself in the shower.

I'm just going to go for broke here. I am very concerned about coming across as pushy and fanatical, which is not where I'm coming from at all. This is information, nothing more, nothing less. If it helps you or interests you, that's great. If not, disregard it and please, please know that I am all for you getting things done however you need to. Honest. Check this out for babywearing while pumping. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3sW6pIPBJOU&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D3sW6pIPBJOU and, of course, I did a post about showering with a newborn: http://www.hellobee.com/2013/05/09/the-cave-people-made-me-do-it-showering-with-the-small-set/ Both things are not necessarily desirable or helpful for everyone, but some people do them.

I have a zero threshhold for my babies crying. Not that there is anything wrong with it per se, just it sets off every alarm bell in my entire body and I'm fairly non-functional until I "fix" it. Babywearing made my life so nice. If you want to try to help with the crying and also get things done, it might help. Otherwise you just do whatever you need to. The most important is to be able to take care of you and the baby, so sometimes you might need to make sure needs are met and then take a moment for self care. It is certainly important, too!

I didn't personally, but I also had my Mom around in the newborn days to hold her when I needed to shower or eat.

Have you tried putting him in a bouncer in the bathroom? Would it help him to be able to see you?

My lo was the same way! It's totally fine to let them fuss for a little while. I also started pumping while she was awake ... I'd put her in the crib with her mobile - which was the one and only thing other than me that soothed her for more than two minutes, or I'd pump while she did.tummy time. Sometimes she'd be fine lying on her back and cooing, playing with toys as long as I was right there ... So I could pump then. As for showers .. I put her in the crib with the mobile and the monitor on her and if she fussed, she fussed! Showers made me feel human, those are nonnegotiable :)

oh yeah, for sure we let him cry as a newborn :). not too terribly long, but he was fine to cry for a few minutes (maybe up to 20?) if i knew he was otherwise ok and things needed to be done etc.

i felt bad sometimes, too, but he self soothes so well now, i think it was the right thing to do at the time :)

Do you put her in the bathroom when you shower? Once I realized I could stick him in his rock n play in the bathroom with a couple of toys as I showered, it was life changing! He was safe in the rock n play, liked the white noise and moisture from the shower, and I got to take a shower in peace. I removed my outer curtain for a while and just had the clear plastic one, because I wanted to see him, but I eventually put our curtain back once I realized he was safe.

No advice on the naps, unfortunately. My Lo napped on me for probably the first four months, and I kinda loved it.

As usual, I had the same question! When I'm home by myself, I have to let him cry while I wash the shield or pump parts. It kills me because he'll default to a sobbing hysterical cry after a few minutes. He has been sooo fussy the past week... I feel like unless he's eating or fast asleep he's crying. I guess I need to get over it so I can get more stuff done (like feeding myself).

Not an answer to your specific question, but do you have a swing? LO is 9 weeks now and up until maybe a week or two ago the swing was pretty much the only place I could put her down and walk away without her crying. She's starting to be into her activity mat, bouncy seat with the toys attached, and probably would love a mobile (we don't have one). Some of those might be worth trying, or trying again if it's been a few weeks? I had given up on the bouncer because she didn't like it but just tried it again recently and she is mesmerized by the toys - I get like 20 minutes of entertainment out of it!

Yes. He gets super clingy in the evenings after I get him from daycare and sometimes he has to cry a little while I use the bathroom. I try to baby wear as much as possible when I have to get stuff done, which helps a lot. When I EP'd, I kept him in the rnp next to me so I could rock him, give him a pacifier, stroke his cheek, etc.

yeah, mine just cried sometimes. If i was in the shower, going to the bathroom, hands deep in a raw chicken, etc. Around 8 weeks, my LO started to enjoy her mobile, so I could set her on her back in the crib and she'd just look up and watch it. Maybe try that?

@rahlyrah: you are a great mom. My LO had to cry a few times while I pumped or showered. It's no big deal at all. I'd have LO at my feet in a bouncy seat while I pumped. I'd bounce it with my foot. Sometimes he'd fall asleep, sometimes he wouldn't.

Yes, I do. She has started to fuss for no reason, so if I need to get something done, I let her be fussy. If she's full, has a clean diaper, and is safe, sometimes there's just nothing I can do. I only started doing it recently, like in the last week, and I've already seen an improvement in her self-soothing skills, so I don't feel bad.

I know that sounds like a horrible question. I'm not sure what else to do though.

B is a horrible napper. He really only naps when held or in the car. Thankfully, DH works from home so he is always around to help if I need to pump, shower, or use the bathroom. The problem is, he travels to California for a week a month for work. Next week is his first week back, which leaves me alone with an 8 week old.

How do I pump or shower if he screams when I put him down? Occasionally, he can occupy himself on his playmat or bouncy seat but it's not guaranteed.

On the upside, I don't go back to work until after he returns so I don't have to stress about that aspect yet. I just feel so guilty letting him scream. I don't have many other options though. Am I horrible mom if I let him cry for 10-15 minutes a few times a day?
