My DD was not a napper until she was close to 4 months old. She would go 6-7 hours, too, but she was happy enough doing it. We never tried to schedule her, though -- we just fed her if she seemed hungry, tried to put her down for naps if she seemed tired but didn't force it, and we never woke her if she was getting a good nap in. She naturally started to set her own bedtime around 3 months and soon after that, started to want daytime naps. We were totally EASY failures but oh well, haha.

@Mae: I used to be type a and this is what I struggled with most. I was so so much happier once I finally gave up trying to manipulate his sleep. He is usually a great sleeper (19m) but still ranges his wake ups from 6:30-8:30 and throws a three hour nap and sometimes zero nap. There has never been any specific correlation between day sleep and night sleep for him even when he was small.

I 100% now follow the never wake a sleeping baby rule :P

Yep, I fed every 2.5 -3 hours so I would wake her up. She was a rockstar sleeper at night and is 20 months and we never hot a regression.

@Mae: I was pumping and supplementing (heavily) at that point. She just started eating more at each feeding, but still ate every 3 hours during the day. I wasn't forcing her to eat more, she just naturally started regulating to daytime eating.

I never had that problem because DS never napped more than 30 minutes until he was about 8 months.

But generally, I am not a schedule person when it comes to babies. I let them lead. So if DS is sleeping I let him! DS wasn't on a "schedule" until he ate three meals a day!

@Mae: oh C was a master at fighting naps. And all the sleep books and experts are like, at that age they should only be awake for and hour, two hours, Max, at a time. And I was like, I KNOW!!!!! Tell my baby! Putting her in the moby and walking as walking and walking worked for us.

Our motn wake ups were really long at that age too. Eventually, and I can't remember when, I started doing only one side if she fell asleep on the first side. Didn't seem to affect how quickly she woke up again. You probably would want to wait a few more weeks for that while your supply is gettig established and she's still growing so fast right now.

At that age I was still doing things on a 2.5 to 3 hour rotation. But eventually I did put him on a very, veeeeeery strict schedule. And I would wake him up to keep him on track. Eventually I didn't need to wake him up and his body adjusted and he would wake up on time. It seriously saved my life.

@loveisstrange: When your LO started STTN that early, how did that affect their daytime eating? I probably worry about this more than I would if I was EBF, but since I breastfeed, pump, and supplement with formula-- I have some idea of how much my LO is eating. I know she needs around 25 oz/day and she usually eats 3-5 oz 7x/day (4a, 7a, 10a, 1p, 4p, 7p, 10p). Did you feed more often than every 3 hrs? Or did you just start feeding more at each feeding?

Around 5/6 weeks is when we noticed C getting tired every night around 6:30/7. So we started putting her to bed. She did her wakeup at ~2:30 and then every 3 hours after for a couple weeks and then slept her first 12+ hour night straight through at 8 weeks.

Im a believer in letting them set their bedtime. It sounds like she's doing that for you. I'd roll with it and just put her down at 8. It didn't translate to more night wakeups for us.

As for naps, we only woke her if it got too close to bedtime.

@ShootingStar: The thing with Fia is, she *usually* falls asleep nursing and I can put her down then and she's fine. If she gets woken up after nursing it all takes a lot longer because then she may want formula, or just to be rocked for another 20 min to get her to sleep. So my routine is: take her out of sleep sack (she doesn't really like nursing in it much), nurse first side, burp, change diaper, reswaddle, calm her down if needed (sometimes changing her diaper pisses her off), nurse side 2, and back to sleep. *Usually* that works okay, but sometimes she poops while nursing side 2 and I have to change her again. Then calm her down after that.

I never woke him from a nap. I figured if he was sleeping, he needed the sleep. And napping during the day never seemed to affect his night time sleep.

For the MOTN diaper changes, are you doing those first or after feeding? I was telling my mom at one point about how long our night wake ups were - feeding the baby, having him fall alseep, needing to change his diaper, etc. And she was like "well you need to change his diaper first." We usually fed first because he'd wake up screaming and hungry and hated diaper changes. But once I changed him first, he was able to fall asleep much quicker. MOTN waking went from an hour plus to about 20-30 minutes.

I am super type a too and I really struggled with my first. Once I let go, life got a lot easier. I read in the moms on call book to never let them sleep more than 2 hours during the day past right weeks old so it doesn't interfere with their nighttime sleep. Perhaps in a week or two give that a go. I've found with both my kids things took a great turn right about 8 weeks old.

@troberts1021: lolz tell my daughter that (that she can't stay asleep very long). She is a championship nap fighter, usually. Sometimes she is up for like 6-7 hours before I can get a nap out of her! We're getting a little better at getting naps... but man can she fight it haha. The only bummer about MOTN feedings for us is they take soooo long. We are still working through a lot of breastfeeding issues and every feeding takes 30-40 min and then sometimes another 20-30 min if LO didn't get enough and decides she wants some formula. Add in a diaper change or two, and usually our MOTN wakeup takes 1-1.5 hours.

But! I suppose I could try putting her to bed at 8 and just see what happens! I should've done that tonight so if she had a bad night I could nap tomorrow when my husband is home :)

Never been a fan of "never wake a sleeping baby". We woke him to feed every 2.5 hours on the recommendation of my lactation consultant. This helped him sleep longer at night. I still wake him (at 15 months) if his nap is long because it will throw off his bedtime. I think, whatever works for you is fine.

@Mae, at 7 weeks your LO can't stay awake very long, so I went with 2 hours max of keeping him up before bedtime.

I'm also a big fan personally of putting babies to bed super early with the theory of "sleep begets sleep." Around 8 weeks we noticed our son getting sleepy around 8 p.m. and set his bedtime then and did the whole routine. It did involve another MOTN feeding though, but it was around midnight or so and he went right back to sleep.

I know a lot of mom's who put baby to sleep early and then did a "dream feed" when they went to bed, and it sounds like it might be worth trying since you kind of do something similar now? And the fact she sleeps so well at this age is amazing, congrats!!

@Mae: it's such a blur from those days, but I think I tried for her to be up two hours before "bedtime" (which was a very loose concept at that age). I say try putting her down at 8 and see what happens. My motto was every day is an experiment. If it works, great, if it doesn't it's just one bad night and now you know.

@swedishfish: @troberts1021: @Foodnerd81: How long did you try to keep them up before bed time? In the last week our LO has insisted on conking out around 7:30 or 8pm and sleeps until I wake her up to take her to bed. Which pisses her off lol. So I wake her up usually at 9:30 or 10, then nurse her, then put her down. And she usually sleeps then until 6:30 or 7 with only one MOTN wakeup (which I think is super awesome for 6 weeks!). I've considered just putting her to bed at 8 because it seems like that is when she wants to go down for the night. But I guess I worry if I actually put her to bed at 8 (and didn't nurse her then around 10 when I go to bed) she'd have more MOTN wake ups and wake up earlier for the day. I should maybe try... but I'm chicken to mess with a good thing haha.

I woke mine up the first few weeks to feed him every two hours as the pediatrician suggested, but once we hit about 10 weeks, I decided it was ridiculous and to never wake a sleeping baby. Some days he'll sleep like what sleeps all day, and other days he'll do 2 short naps.

The only time I will wake him up is if he goes down really late and I want him up some before his normal bedtime (6:30 p.m.)...and I have to confess that the few times I've needed to go do something and he's been asleep a long time, I went upstairs and banged around to see if he would wake up :D

To preface: I am a total type-A schedule person... which means I've had a rough time with this whole baby thing and I am REALLY trying to let go and be more flexible. I know it's impossible to really make a newborn live by my schedule.

That being said... at the suggestion of our pediatrician I started trying to get LO on a rough EASY schedule at 5 weeks (she's almost 7 weeks now, so we're just 2 weeks into this). Her weight gain is good at this point so I don't have to wake to eat, although I try to feed her every 3 hours, unless she seems really hungry earlier.

Usually I have a hard time getting her to sleep at all during the day, and I'm lucky to get some 30 or 45 min naps. But some days she seems sleepier and she'll sleep for hours. And I always worry she is sleeping too long? Like first I don't want her eating to get too far off schedule. And also I worry if she sleeps all day long she won't sleep as well at night (she is currently a rock star sleeper at night).

So basically right now I tend to wake her if she's going to be more than 30 min late for a meal, or if she has been sleeping 2 hours.

Am I the only one that does this? Do other people just let their babies sleep as much as they want all day?
