@cranberryapple: I had been sneezing all the time and just felt like my eyes and face was puffy. I touched some and then touched my face and leg (not on purpose, just wasn't thinking) and both spots got red and swollen. That's when I knew it was mold and we decided to rip up the floors in the kitchen (the landlord had been saying it wasn't a problem). I had already suspected I was because when there was a mold issue in the other house I would sleep out on the back porch in order to breath ok at night. Again the landlord was in denial about how bad a mold problem he had - that time it was from a washer leak that happened when he moved the machine, he weirdly had on carpet in the laundry room. Once the carpet was gone it wasn't perfect but I could sleep inside again.

We had it really bad in our basement. It was unfinished, and all our wood framing was covered in black mold. DH couldn't even go into the basement because he would immediately get a semi-closed throat.
We ended using a product called Concrobium, and sprayed it *everywhere*. It's been 2+ years now, and it hasn't tried to come back at all. It's supposed to prevent future mold growth, and be perfectly safe for pets and kids. I didn't look into too much, but from what I understand I think it's a salt solution, and the salt is what kills the mold. We got it at Home Depot.

We got mold on a wall (AC pipe was sweating during the summer) and we used a part water / part bleach spray bottle to clean it and just scrubbed the mold off.

I am allergic to mold and have read that if you are getting it in one area in particular that it might be a humidity issue. One way to verify this is to get those dehumidifying bags (they sell them at Lowe's) and see how fast it gets "used" (I think the crystals change colors)? Not an exact science, but keeps you from having to buy a dehumidifier if humidity isn't your issue.

At 2 houses diff houses I rented there was a mold issue. Both times it was due to a leak that the owner hadn't bothered dealing with before I moved in but I'm super sensitive to mold so I got sick pretty quickly.

We had to pull up the kitchen flooring - the dishwasher leaked. There was mold everywhere, it was horrible. I couldn't be around it but my husband and dad cleaned it, aired it out, cleaned it again. They scrubbed the walls in the house good since so many spores had gotten around and did our basement good too. After that life was a lot better. We put in a dehumidifier, which also helped keep the basement in check. We would still get a bit of mold that would creep in when it was really wet but that was easy to clean up and it was only when there was a pile of it under the flooring that it was a big problem.

@cranberryapple: We get it around windows and sliders too, and we're also lazy about cleaning it. We should get on that this weekend!

No real advice — I think we bought some sort of mold cleaner (not sure what it was).

We got mold in our bedroom when a gutter clogged & back flowed into our bedroom. We used a product called mold away and it was quick and effective, and we repaired the issue so it shouldn't happen again

I don't know if it was safe for kids... I'm assuming because it was safe for our cats. This was years ago, before we had kids.

If so, how did you do it? We tend to get mold around our windows and sliding doors, and I admit, we had been kinda lazy about cleaning it. We finally did have to do it because we suspected DS was having an allergic reaction to it, but I'm pretty sure we haven't done enough besides cleaning it with bleach. I heard it's a pain in the butt to get rid of it entirely. Do you have experience with this? What do you do about your mold issues and are they recurring?
