My dad's parents owned a restaurant (American lunch/burger joint) and were friends with Korean restaurant owners and my dad helped out in their kitchen, and they taught him some Korean recipes. It kind of seemed like everything was the wrong texture? Meat was tough and dry. Veggies were boiled to mush. She once made scallops and it was literally like chewing rubber. He started out with a lot of ready-made freezer type meals, but he's really grown and loves cooking now! At all. My dad made 95% of our meals until I was old enough to take over some of the cooking, otherwise we went out or got takeout. In recent years, my mom has started learning to cook and has made some yummy things, but she's still not very confident in the kitchen and follows recipes exactly as written...so she doesn't really have a signature dish. I do get nostalgic for my dad's stir fry, among other things! But the way she uses oils and fats turns me off from the majority of her food.
