I'm planning on just taking prenatal vitamins as my daily vitamin until we are done having kids. My doctor said she actually recommends that all women of child bearing age take them because they are basically daily multivitamins with a little extra. I figured there's no harm in taking them for that length of time!

I don't take regular vitamins, but at my last two appointment (general practice and gyn) I mentioned we are planning to start trying this summer. They both suggested I start taking either prenatal or multi vitamins with folic acid now to get in the habit.

So right now we are preventing, but I still take prenatals.

There is a study that found there was a link between mother's who took folic acid between 4weeks prior to conception and 8 weeks into their pregnancy and a reduced incidence of severe autism. I've heard before that all women of child bearing age should be taking a pre-natal vitamin and/or folic acid supplements to reduce risk of neural tube defects in case of an accidental pregnancy, but this study suggests it may have even more benefits.

This study doesn't prove causality, but I figure that taking the vitamin (or at least folic acid) doesn't hurt and might in fact help quite a bit.

Here's a link to the NPR story I heard, which also contains a link to the study itself.

Just google "neural tube defects" and I think you will never risk not taking prenatal vitamins again. If you may get pregnant, you should be taking them.

I've been taking them for ages! Started when I was 22 didn't TTC until 31!
I figure they're as easy to take as a regular vitamin.

I took a multi vitamin for a year before ttc and then switched to a prenatal a few months before we started trying. I take gummy vitamins to make it easier.

We're not ready for another yet, but I'm also not on any type of BC (just pull and pray). Soo I should probably go pick up some vitamins because accidents can happen. I won't be taking prenatals though. Just a regular multivitamin with folic acid. They're cheaper than prenatals and my OB said 400 mcg of folic acid before pregnancy is fine.

I take a multi-vitamin, omega 3 and folic acid supplement. I added the folic acid recently, when we decided to NTNP//TTC.

No, but I am taking a multivitamin. There's enough folic acid in the vitamins I take. I eat a semi-paleo diet and do not need the extra iron in most prenatals.

I'm voting no to both. I always forget my normal vitamins, and I don't take any prenatals.

Although I don't know if I would consider myself in the NTNP category? I'm not on any sort of BC (or condoms), but we are P&P. I know it's not a "reputable" type of BC, but we are still technically preventing, right? lol

Yup. Doc told me to start taking them 3 months prior to starting TTC. Only taking folic acid, should start taking the multivitamin for women as well.
