@mrs.shinerbock: @looch: That's good to know! That's the way I've kind of seen it all along but suddenly I wondered if we needed something to "do". I'm reassured!!

If it makes you feel any better, I am the mom of a 5 year old and I'll usually bring something for him to do in my bag, because I never know if there are going to be other kids around or not...so I wouldn't worry about it if the kids are all older, chances are everyone will be at the playground.

We usually don't, especially if there is a playground nearby. Sometimes I will bring a few things of bubbles or sidewalk chalk for the kids to play with and someone always has a soccer ball in their car, which will keep both the kids and the adults in our group entertained. Maybe take something like that if you are worried about it, but no need for an organized activity.

We didn't have any planned activities (only five kids including LO) at LO's 1st or 2nd birthday parties. I think between the food and the playground you will be all set!

Nope. Family parties are for people to catch up with each other, not be entertained IMO.

For LO's first birthday we are just having a small party with our immediate families. There will be a handful of kids ranging from 5-15 and 10-15 adults. We are having it at our neighborhood community room and will have appetizers, cake, drinks, and sugar cookie favors. There is a playground onsite.

The party will be two hours. Do we need to have a planned activity of some kind? It's not a children's party where we need to entertain a large group of one year olds, it's more just a family get together. I envisioned everyone just kind of hanging out, eating, drinking but I'm not sure if that will get boring.
