Yes, my first instinct was to comment about water because I'm a big fan of kids drinking water, but then I decided this was a better place for cmnmiseration! My MIL was a little nuts because we didn't give our toddler milk (because he was milk protein intolerant!) but he "neeeeeeeeeded it." No. He needed fluids and fat and since he drank plenty of water and I put coconut oil in his breakfast and fed him avocado, etc, his needs were met. Plus he was still nursing, and all the recommendations for water, milk, etc assume a weaned child. Blah. I'm delaying our second child's start with solids specifically so it happens after we visit the inlaws for the holidays because I just. can't. even.

@Meowkers: totally! My post started out that I was genuinely wondering if he needs needs it. I know they can have it and it's good to be practicing cups, as well as getting a taste for water. And a little water is good with solid food intake. It became more of a vent as I typed :) thanks for understanding that!

@junebugsmama: So the way I'm understanding, there are really two issues to this post:
1. does your baby need water?
2. your MIL doesn't respect your wishes when it comes to your child.

I commented on the first issue so please don't take it to be a support for the way your MIL is acting. My MIL is crazy as well so I totally get it.

We offered LO water at that age and she loved it (still does I think bc of giving it to her then).

I know MIL is being too much but I would just shrug it off. At least she's not offering juice. Water isn't too bad in the scheme of things.

Ugh. My MIL tried to give my 4mo a bottle of water last month and a candy bar to my 2yo. Not cool. By 11 months my DS was drinking a significant amount of water, but since you're offering it and nursing I'm sure it's fine.

@SweetiePie: thank you for taking the time to write this. It's so important for me to remember. That's what it comes down to. That I feel like she doesn't respect or even listen to my wishes or opinions. I might have a good reason but it doesn't matter, she steamrolls over it. Sometimes it's something harmless like pushing water, and other times it's more ridiculous like letting him try her Diet Coke.

@FaithFertility: thank you for letting me know! Sometimes I worry that since he is just not into sippy cups, bottles, or straw cups reliably, he might be low on water intake, so that makes me feel netter!

@pastemoo: thank you! I just keep telling myself how hard it's gonna be to let a potential daughter in law someday do something I disagree with for potential grandkids. (Eek)

@Meowkers: he eats a good amount of food and I do try to offer water when he is eating or after meals. It's more like her insistence that he neeeeeeds water (for his organs as she says) and I am withholding it from him. Actually even more than that it's that she is telling me what to do with such disregard for my reasoning for doing or not doing stuff. I may be a FTM but I am not totally clueless, lots of experience with kids as a pediatric nurse.

@jill_a55: it's totally generational! At least he's older because with younger babies it could be potentially dangerous!

Not as much of an annoyance, but my mom and I had this talk as well. When we were born I think it was the norm to get bottles water to give babies as well as nursing, so she was kind of shocked and always asking if he should have more water as well. I think when my LO was 11 months I was definitely keeping a cup of water around though for him throughout the day, as well as nursing and solids.

is he also eating solid foods? If he's eating enough solid foods where he is having solids be an entire meal then he should have water. My DD is 10 months and she loves drinking water. We give it to her before and after each meal.

Not the same, but sorta similar idea...I just had a conversation with my MIL about respecting my wishes. I asked multiple times to not bring a present every time she sees my son (which is weekly). She ignored me and even once said "I know this makes you mad, but..." Then she shrugged. I was LIVID. I finally waited till we were alone and told her that when she does things I ask her not to, it is offensive because she is sending the message that my requests and wishes and feelings don't matter to her. I said I appreciated that she means well, but when I asked her not to I meant it. She defended at first and said that its how she wants to show love and I explained other ways she could show love and explained WHY I don't want her to Bring a present every time she comes (spoiling, he'll be excited for presents but not her, my parents don't do it so she's creating favoritism, we live in an apartment with limited storage, etc). I was just firm when she tried to defend that I was very serious and she eventually got it. She left a little butt hurt but...no presents since! And we are fine.

I think just speaking up, as scary as it is because I am NOT confrontational, was the only thing that would ever stopped her. So, you might need to take that approach. Explain that it's not that you think giving him a little water is bad, it's that she's doing it despite your request not to. And see what happens from there.

If he's still nursing on demand? I pretty much know the answer is no, he can be offered water to practice drinking from a cup and with meals.

I am vacationing with my mother in law and she's constantly going on about how he needs more water. He nurses frequently during the night and 4-5 times (some very brief some long) during the day. Plenty of wet diapers, etc etc.
She will literally ignore me when I say he doesn't need it and take a spoon or small cup and give it to him. I don't mind giving him water, he's not chugging a glass or bottle full. He doesn't even take a bottle. It just bothers me how she constantly implies I am depriving him. He will almost always try to drink the water because it's fun to him, and so she will say "see? He wants it!!"

She also constantly mentions he's hungry and wants to offer him snacks all day long. He isn't eating way too much but I don't think he needs to be offered bread and fruit constantly throughout the day.

Anyways, this is mainly a vent I guess. So I apologize!
