@sunny: that could definitely be related--lip ties can make babies less efficient at the breast, and have more trouble removing milk, which causes supply to go down. Glad it hasn't caused too much trouble fo ryou though!

@78h2o: if you're still having issues breast feeding and you hope to nurse for a while longer (so not planning on weaning in the next month or so) I personally would at least get an appt with an ENT to see what they say and what the procedure would entail at this age. Then you at least have all the information to make an informed decision and won't regret doing/not doing anything!

My LO has the same thing although I don't really have any problems with breastfeeding other than potentially having a slightly low-ish supply. But I don't know if that is related or not.

That looks like one to me also. My LO had a lip and tongue tie. He got his tongue tied first clipped at 5 days. Breastfeeding was aweful, it was so painful . By week 6 LO had started refusing to nurse (he an aversion to breastfeeding due to the frustration and work he had trying to nurse) I went to see a new LC and she pointed out that his tongue tie was not clipped far enough. We were referred to a dentist who reclipped his tongue and also did his lip tie! If you are anywhere near the Dayton, OH area I would suggest seeing him we drove an hour and half to get his procedure done.

Looks like one. DS had a tongue tie and lip tie and we had them both clipped when he was a newborn because we were having SO many BF issues.

@78h2o: DD only made the clicky noise in the beginning so they can feed silently. Also her coming off could mean while she can latch well the tie makes it hard for her to stay latched. We had DD done with the laser (it was our only option) and it was so much easier than I expected. She handled it so well!! If you want to hear more about how it went let me know :)

@rachiecakes: Thanks, I'd missed that. So my husband and my lips look just like yours... is that not normal? What does a normal upper lip look like?!

@aprk: Thanks!

Hmm... I wish I had thought to check this earlier. LO is 7 mo, so not sure I'd want to put her through having it clipped at this point. I know there are some ENTs nearby that will do it with a laser though... not sure what to do!

I have one & DS does too. I never had pain nursing but maybe my supply was affected? Hard to say looking back. I'd definitely ask about it.

@Mrs. Lovejoy: it's no hard to know, right?! I'm going to ask a LC, but I've heard some aren't trained to spot it, so who knows.

@Mrs. Fox:  @aprk:  @AprilFool:    @hilsy85:  @dojo: - thanks so much for sharing your experiences!

@Kemma: she doesn't make clicky noises ... I don't think her top lip usually flares out, so maybe that is why it hurts? All the LCs said she had a good latch, though i do remember one mentioning the need for fish lips. She comes on and off a lot, but maybe she's just distracted.

I'm going to post another photo I just took. If you still think it looks like a tie, I'm going to make an appointment with a peds ENT to see what he thinks.

Definitely looks like a lip tie to me and if you're having discomfort breastfeeding then I would 100 percent get it clipped. It's a very very easy procedure. My Lo has a lip tie and we sent get it clipped bc I was told it wouldn't affect nursing--WRONG. If I had gotten it fine nursing would have been so much more comfortable so much more quickly fr me. I highly recommend meeting with a pediatric ENT as they are the ones who can best diagnose and clip lip ties. Also has you Lo been checked for a posterior tongue tie? They often go together.

my LO has this too - we saw an ENT about it after ped noticed it at our 2 month app. I was having some pain while breastfeeding still at about 6 weeks pp but by about 10 weeks the pain had nearly completely subsided. After seeing the ENT we decided that we would just wait and see... and now I think that unless we notice any speech issues we will probably not clip it.

My wee girl had a lip and tongue tie and it was having the lip tie clipped at eight weeks that made the biggest difference!

Does your LO lose suction or make clicky noises when nursing? The lip tie can prevent baby from flipping out the top lip and can cause pain as the baby can sometimes then clamp down to stay on the breast.

My son has this. I dont know about breast feeding- we never had any problems - but the pediatrician said not to worry about it too much. It might contribute to there being a gap between his teeth but then again he might outgrow it. I believe you can get surgery to correct it but we're going to wait to see if there's a problem before we put him under the knife.

I'll have to try to get a better photo... my LO was not very cooperative!

Just wondering because breastfeeding has never been 100% comfortable for me and I've had supply issues all along.
