My LO loved being swaddled, when she started sucking her thumb at about 3m we just swaddled her her preferred sucking thumb outside the swaddle. Stopped swaddling completely at about 5m.

I wasn't planning on it and we didn't at first. But then he was awake every half hour to hour because he'd flail his arms and hit his face so he'd wake up. They have what is called moro reflex where their nervous systems are still very immature and developing. Not only does swaddling help keep them asleep, but it gives them comfort by creating a tight, confined space, like the womb.
So for us, it became a necessity.

Wanted to revive this thread to say that our daughter sleeps unswaddled. We religiously swaddled her in a double swaddle every time that we put her down for the first few days, and she HATED it. She would scream and writhe around trying to free her arms. After a couple of nights of that, I decided to try her out in a sleep sack with arms. She slept like an angel, and we haven't looked back since.

My son hated it. We tried it when he was first born... Then we did swaddle for a period of weeks 6-15 or so. He always fought to get his arms free, and always fought sleep by jackknifing his legs up and down. After we found the rock and play at week 15 we stopped swaddling him because we needed to strap him in to the RNP and swaddling wasn't working anyway.

We never swaddled. They didn't swaddle in the hospital here in tokyo. They tucked her in with blankets but didn't swaddle. They also don't put hats on the babies either. We tried swaddling when we brought her home but she didn't like her arms so confined. She always sleeps with her arms up above her head.

6 years of working in NICU has convinced me of the magic of the swaddle. In 6 years I have never met a baby that didn't sleep better swaddled. My LO will definitely be swaddled for the first couple months, we probably will wean the swaddle at around 3 months (if LO is ready!)

I think I did when I first brought DS home, but not for long... maybe a week? Not sure if it made a difference but DS was sleep trained pretty early, & really I never had issues with him sleeping or waking himself up.

I don't plan to really swaddle with this one either.

my guy hates all those swaddle suits miracle blanket, halo, etc. but he doesn't seem to mind just a regular long swaddle blanket.

for our LO, swaddling helps him sleep so much better even though he really doesn't enjoy it. during the day, we don't swaddle him.

I've noticed that Europeans don't swaddle as much as Americans. In fact, I even asked at the hospital and the nurses looked at me like I was a crazy person. I finally broke out the swaddle in the middle of the night after DS couldn't sleep AT ALL because of the moro reflex, so I just tried it and it was magic.

My husband thought it was a straightjacket and hated the idea of it, but since it helped us all sleep, he got on board.

We tried to, but he has hated being swaddled from the start, especially his arms. We used an A&A blanket around his waist and legs, and still do occasionally if he is kicking himself awake. Most of the time I lay him down drowsy in the crib and he falls asleep just fine.

If your LO doesnt require it then there isnt a need. Liv could NOT sleep without it, though she did go through a phase of about 3 weeks where she wanted nothing to do with it before we got her back on

We swaddled, it really seemed to help her sleep. She would jerk her arms around and wake herself up if we didn't. We stopped at 2 1/2 months though, it seemed like she was done with it and not having it helped her find her thumb to sleep.
