I used to do some (non medical) transcription on the side. I got the lead through my actual job, as we have people do it full time in the office, but when the load gets really heavy they would "contract" it out to anybody who wanted to to do at home (and had adequate security clearance on all adults residing there) essentially rather than paying overtime.
Mine were police 911 tapes and various statements that needed to be transcribed for the file. We used a software called .wav pedal that allows you to start/stop/rewind using (duh) a foot pedal, and I was allowed to borrow it from work, but I don't know if other places would make you purchase something similar. It was essentially honour system. You'd take home a file, and then just say how long it took you to do, and they paid $30.00/hr (higher if you could do languages other than English) seven years ago. It was in your own interest to not pad your times since if you were considered too slow overall they just wouldn't use you anymore. I type about 90 wpm (they wouldn't allow anybody who couldn't type at least 75 I believe) and it usually took me about double the real time length of the statement to complete since sometimes you have to listen over and over to figure out what people are saying.

@Danizaur: I also had a friend in college that just did regular typing (not medical related) and she did have to actually go into an office to type but her hours were really flexible. They had more monitoring software though that could track not only how fast you were typing but also how many minutes per hour you were productive (or asking for a light load).

From home, I think there is a lot more flexibility. She has a 24 hour turn around. So she gets the files at like 7 pm and has to return them by like 7pm the next night unless she has a specific extension authorized. She can take time off by just asking to not be assigned any files.

@T.H.O.U.: I would definitely be interested in that rather than freelance random jobs on the Internet.

I can try to talk to a family member that does medical transcribing. She works from home. I believe there is a community college class that she had to take. From there I know she works for a "company" that has the software and manages the contracts with the doctors. The doctors send in their audio calls and she has to call into a phone line to listen and she types it up. I believe she types in word and then puts it into the software program to upload back to the doctors. Some doctors have different formats (specific fonts/sizes/etc). I believe she is paid per line and now that she's in with this company its never really rejected that I know of.

For costs, obviously there is your home computer, plus whatever software you need to download and upload the files (depends on who you work through) and then there is an ear pieces/headset and a foot pedal that you use to pause/play the recordings.

No experience, but I'm subscribing to this because i've been considering it as well! I hear about these "work from home" opportunities all the time but they always turn out to be scams or too-good-to-be-true.

Im interested in picking up transcribing audio as a small side job for some extra money, since I believe I will be good at it. I'm a fast typer, have excellent grammar and spelling, and a good knowledge of medical terminology.

I'm about to give birth any day now so I won't be picking it up immediately, maybe in a few months when I go back to my job. I'm also only a seasonal employee so it would be a good part time job to focus on when I'm laid off.

I just feel like I don't know where to start. I've located a couple of legit sites where transcribing jobs are posted, but I still have a lot of questions. What software do you use to transcribe? Word?
Any resources I can be taking advantage of to make sure I'm prepared? Most jobs I've seen will reject your work and pay if it's not up to their standards.
Is there a certain format you should use when transcribing?

If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be awesome!
