Sometimes I just rinse with really hot water. Other times I use soap. Sometimes I throw everything in the dishwasher.

@Jennimac: at home, I have a big plastic bowl permanently in the left side of the kitchen sink, and I fill that with hot water and 7th gen dish soap and throw the parts in there for either a quick dunk and a rinse, OR I break out the bottle brushes every 2-3 uses and actually clean everything, OR if I'm feeling lazy I just dump out the milk and store bottles and parts in the fridge to reuse.

At work, I rinse with hot water and store in the fridge to be used again. I use the same parts all day at work and just wash them once I get home.

I only sanitize once in a blue moon.

I read somewhere (either in pump or bottle instructions) to soak in soapy water for 10 minutes before washing.... so I do. On the other hand I know DH doesn't and I'm totally OK with that too.

I get build up in my Freestyle parts if I don't use soap right away.

I always rinse, then put in a bowl with hot soapy water, let soak for a few minutes (or an hour if I forget), then use a little more soap and a bottle brush to clean everything. Now I'm thinking it's probably overkill, but since I don't pump every day, I feel like it's more important to get them super clean if they will sit for a while before I use them again.

Nope, I pretty much wash them the same as you! I think the soap is helpful in getting off the milk residue, so I try to soak my pump parts once a week to help with that, but daily it's just hot water!

I don't always wash with soap either. I do use the Medela cleaning wipes when I'm pumping at though, then I sanitize them once I get home. At home, I just rinse with hot water also then sterilize every few days.

I do wash DS's bottles and nipples with hot water and soap though.

I put everything in the dishwasher - too much work to wash everything by hand.

But, yes, I think you need soap - BM is really fatty, so I think it would be hard to get everything truly clean without soap. That said, I think the bacteria worries about BM are really overstated - I would be much more worried about the bacteria you introduce handling the pump parts than by the bacteria of the BM itself.

I wash my pump parts and bottles with hot water by hand. I also use the sterilizing bags every couple of days. I don't always use soap because I'm using HOT water. Is this okay? Should I start using soap? It's so hard because I feel like the soap runs off after I wash the first part. Should I put them in a bowl and wash them? Now I feel like a germy girl doing it this way.......
