Gift giving is totally one of my mom's love languages, and she still splurges out for us and the girls. Add that to the fact we don't really buy toys during the year, and I want to buy everything at the holidays! They have November and December birthdays, so I keep a list all year and then brainstorm to fill it out in the fall to watch for sales and hand out ideas when asked for them. I do check myself though. Christmas was smaller for DH, and it's one of the few things about which we have different expectations as to what's enough. I only have one main gift idea for each LO at the moment.
