However, we always dressed up, and my kids seem to enjoy it. I really dislike scary anything. The neighbor across the street put on a wherewolf mask last year and scared the bejeezus out of my DD (he said sorry and didn't realize we had kids with us??). She refuses to go back to his house this year. (it's only been recently celebrated in korea, if at all still) so my brother and i didn't have costumes at school. (my bro's teacher made him a "mask" out a brown paper lunch bag) and i just walked around the parade in reg clothes. </p> <p>that night, we shut off the lights and pretended not to be home, because we didn't have candy. i remember hiding by our bay window with my brother, playing patrol on if kids were still coming up to our house. :P LOL. we hated it at the time, but it's one of our fondest childhood memories when we talk about it now! I love the feeling of the fall that I associate with Halloween. Soggy, cold, dark, foggy nights that smell like wet decaying leaves. And I really really love candy. BUT I totally get not liking it and I don't think you're weird. All the unquestioned cultural appropriation is a concern for me. And Encouraging completely unhealthy eating for children. The inappropriate horror themed public decorations feel awkward, "oh look honey, there's a bloody zombie in that persons yard." The whole thing is questionable. I feel zero connection to it. I have neutral childhood memories of it, and it doesn't make me feel nostalgic. I mostly loved getting dressed up each year. As a younger adult I used to attend parties or go to bars which was also fun.</p> <p>Since I moved out of my parents' place, I haven't really celebrated it. I never understood the obsession with gore and violence and death. I absolutely hated it. I hated having to sing "the worms crawl in the worms crawl out" in music class in elementary school. I remember thinking, why do I have to sing about decomposing bodies?! I was too sensitive and was terrified of it all. To top it off, my birthday was 2 days before. It felt like a mean trick that every year in order to have my birthday, I had to deal with scary Halloween. ;( As an adult, I like pumpkins and fall things, I like costumes and celebrations/parties, I don't mind trick or treating or the candy, but I still don't get the creepy stuff. We're Catholic, so we observe them as a vigil/holy day/feast day trifecta. All Saints' is a holy day of obligation, so we go to church then; All Souls' is a feast day. Halloween is really just the vigil before All Saints', which is kind of all the "reason" you need for a party! And as a former theatre geek myself, I can totally appreciate the desire to dress up and decorate! I made some amazing costumes as a child and as an adult, and I'm really looking forward to throwing costume parties. </p> <p>That said, I'm not a huge fan of the trick-or-treating aspect of Halloween.
