@teawithpaloma: Thanks, I didn't even think of semi-retired people either! And you're right since it just a few hours maybe that actually opens it up to more people that wouldn't be free an entire day. I'm excited this might actually work out because we will save boatloads on daycare, not to mention the preschool is great.

I think you will be surprised how many people will be available to do this! I did this as a college student and there are lots of semi retired people that would have the stamina to do those hours and not the whole day.

@mrs.shinerbock: Thanks!

I also just realized I could just maybe pay a mom to drop DD off at her current daycare after school, their hourly rate for prek is $18, which is high but would be easy for pick up since DS is there. Man, logistics of kids is tough! :-)

My roommate did this during college. She was with the same family for 3 years, she just made her class schedule so she has morning classes each semester.

@HappyBaker: my coworker does this but for the morning shift since they both have to leave really early. The nanny comes early in the morning, gets the kids ready, breakfast, and drives them to daycare. All in all about 2.5 hours each morning. It's a younger college student but has worked very well for them for about 8 months now. I'm sure you can find something similar!

@T.H.O.U.: The school before/after care is only for Kindergarten and up, so preschoolers can't attend (lame!). They also aren't allowed to ride the bus.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @T.H.O.U.: Great idea about college students, I didn't even think of that! We aren't a huge college town but I'm sure there are some around that are free.

@HappyBaker: Oh, and we live in a college town, so yes, there are TONS of young adults willing to do this. My SIL had her kids ride the bus home so the nanny didn't have to deal with carpool lines. She met them at the bus stop and then kept them at the house until parents got home around 6.

@HappyBaker: Does the school after before/after school care? Ours does and its only like $300/month or something. Pick up by 6pm.

I'm not 100% sold on it because its still very structured (cafeteria for a snack and then homework, a bit of playground time and then group activities). For my kindergartener I would like a bit more free time after a long day of school.

Our town has public full day preschool, but the school day is only until 2:30, and DH and I both can't get back from work until 5/5:30. We'd really love to send DD since it's a million times cheaper than daycare, but we'd have to get a part time nanny or babysitter to pick her up from school and watch her for 2.5-3 hours a day.

Does anyone have a set up like this? Do you just use a babysitter or have a part time nanny? I can't imagine anyone actually being available 3 hours a day / wanting to do this!
