@SeptMomma12: Thank you for sharing this with me. Gosh, the hospital episode must have been so, so scary for you. I do hope he outgrows it like you did (and I hope my LO does, too). I Googled RSV (I had never heard of it) and yeah, it could well be something like that with E..... I hope so. Poor little love.

LO had a severe case of RSV (a week in the PICU on oxygen) at 5 months and has had trouble since then. He's 18 months now. Basically the littlest cold, or even just a runny nose, can cause him to wheeze. He's considered a "happy wheezer" in that it really doesn't seem to impact his mood or sleeping, but it's obviously still not ideal. After a particularly bad episode around Christmas this year, the pulmonologist put him on Pulmicort twice a day for the winter. We're planning on stopping in a couple of weeks. That combined with Albuterol when he has a cold has worked wonders. He still spent a lot of the winter wheezing but never really got "sick."

Right now they have just diagnosed him with "reactive airway disease" in the hopes that he will just outgrow it. Both the pulmonologist and pediatrician both said they consider this too early to officially diagnose asthma. Though maybe that's because they feel this is all still related to the RSV? I also had a similar situation as a kid and outgrew it.

@Cherrybee: I don't know, that's what is so strange about the whole thing!

I guess that's what I am saying, we had 4 episodes last winter and I thought we were basically going to be tethered to the nebulizer, but it didn't work out that way. The doctor was surprised as well, and I keep up with him even though he's left the practice and has gone on to a pharma company to develop treatments.

@looch: I'm glad your son has been well for so long. I wonder how it can just come and go like that? So strange.

Last year, my son was exhibiting asthmatic symptoms, we had the nebulizer, the steroids, the whole thing. My husband had childhood asthma that he has since outgrown, so we were very concerned that it would be the same for our son.

We were in the pediatrician's office pretty much every 2 weeks until we got the situation under control and he's been episode free for about a year now. We're not using any medication, but I do keep an eye on him for flare ups, especially activity induced.

E has had a dry, wheezy cough now for over a month. She has been a sorry state. Long story short, today, the doctor said that she appears to have asthma. He prescribed Salbutomol medicine (three times a day) and told us to come back in ten days - if she isn't better, he is going to prescribe an inhaler.

I'm pretty confused and worried. E is only 8 months old - I thought that you couldn't diagnose asthma that early? But the wheeze is unmistakable and it does run in the family - I have mild asthma, my dad was asthmatic and then his dad actually died from an asthma attack (see why I'm so scared?).

Does anyone else's LO suffer from this? When was he/she diagnosed? Is there anything else I can do to help her?? I feel so sorry for her, coughing and crying all night (and not to mention DH and I really, really need some sleep!).
