Several of our friends and family friends have second homes that they rent out. It suddenly goes from being "your vacation home" to just a rental that have to try hard not to care too much about, because at every other turn they are replacing something that a renter broke, finding things that renters did and didn't tell them about, general maintenance due to wear and tear etc. It really sucks the joy out. Not to mention you realize that you make the most income on the rental during the most desirable times (i.e. the time you yourself would want to use it). Some renters can be so great and treat their places like it is their own. home Some decide to start a fire in the fireplace using charcoal and spray lighter fluid on it and nearly burn the place down (my in-laws air b and b). It was our family cottage growing up and then once we got bigger they renovated it bigger/nicer, winterized it, and started renting it when it wasn’t in use. They rented it through a rental company but didn’t have anybody to manage it, which saved money but was a hassle because they had to go up there every time a renter left to clean it. It basically generated enough income to pay the taxes/bills on it. It’s a ton of work but he thinks it’s worth it. When we looked at getting a camp a few years ago and renting 4-6 weeks per summer we decided not to because of what the management company was going to charge. It is rented out when the family isn’t using it and it brings in a good income. My sister-in-law who lives 4 hours away manages it but that’s what she does for a living. Key is having a good cleaning crew in the area. </p> <p>It’s also located in a desirable area close to a popular biking/hiking trail so we never have any trouble renting it out between Easter and Thanksgiving. Although, managing renovations from hours away seems stressful!</p> <p>Would you ever buy a vacation home? </p>
