@daniellemybelle: yup, we tried that for several weeks. IMHO it is hard to do by yourself :( I always needed my husband to help hold the tube while getting her to latch.

@MrsH: Supplemental nursing system. One brand name is the Lact-Aid. It allows you to supplement with a tube at the breast.

I have often thought about only nursing twice a day, but I know I would lose my supply, and LO wouldn't want to nurse at all then. Some babies comfort nurse even when there's hardly any milk though so you could do that! Have you looked into using an SNS? I wish I had explored that when LO was a newborn.

@Mrs. Chipmunk: she is growing like a weed but gets mostly formula. I nurse every time she is hungry and then she eats about 4 ounces of formula.

How is she doing at 5 weeks? Gaining weight? Thriving? Have you tried feeding more often instead of pumping? I was told to pump after every feed the first week after she was born, so I decided to nurse every two hours instead for a week and see if that would be enough and it worked for us...

Have you thought about renting a hospital pump? They're supposed to be much much more efficient at getting milk, and the rental might even be covered by your insurance.

At the end I was only nursing 1-2x/day and my supply didn't really take a hit. You can try and as long as your LO doesn't get frustrated with not getting alot may be able to comfort nurse if not nutrition nurse.

I plan to part time nurse once I stop pumping at work. If nursing is enjoyable for you both, I would cut the pumping session and try to keep the one or two nursing sessions. You are doing a great job, mama!

@Mrs. Chipmunk: yup ringing out my boobs is the only way I can get as much as i do sadly. We have seen several LCs - no tongue tie or at least not one that would cause issues. She does have a narrow roof of her mouth but the LC just says we will have to wait for her to get older/it to get wider. She is five weeks. At this point I'm not sure the pumping is worth the time/my sanity - Getting to this point has not exactly been fun for the first four weeks I would say I spent 50% of my awake time trying to get milk out.

Have you tried hands on pumping? I've been meaning to do a post on this for some time: http://newborns.stanford.edu/Breastfeeding/MaxProduction.html

Sometimes if you can pump one side while the baby nurses on the other you can get more.

Have you seen a lactation specialist to rule out tongue tie? How old is your lo?

I've known people who've had to supplement, and people who have pumped and eventually (3 months later) were able to produce enough. I know the pressure to breastfeed exclusively is so strong, and it makes moms feel unnecessarily bad about supplementing, but in the end all that matters is your lo is getting what they need, and any little bit of BM you can provide will still have fantastic benefits

@Mrs. Chipmunk: the two hours was throughout the day. I was power pumping too and at one point was pumping about 200 minutes a day - it didn't help my supply :(

do you spend the whole two hours pumping? maybe pump for 15 minutes, then take a break, have a hot shower, pump again? or try and pump in the morning when your supply is greatest

I think it is hard to predict your supply and your LO. But, I was able to bf morning and night only for 7 months after we day weaned at 13 months, so it is possible! It was like the best of both worlds--enjoying nursing without the pumping nonsense!

I did part time after I went back to work when LO was 7 months. I did first thing in the morning, and left her in bed with daddy, and right before bed. That turned out to be a really good arrangement for us. I wish we had done that earlier.

Lots of people successfully nurse part time. What works for you and baby is best. Drop that 2 hour pumping session if it's no good for you mentally. Better to be a happy mama for you baby :) Any amount is a gift.

At 4 months I started nursing in the morning and night. During the day I pump 3 times (only get 2-3 oz each session). He gets a bottle of BM and formula. I also pump once after he goes to sleep. Been doing this for a month and so far it has been manageable. Good luck!

I was able to nurse only in the morning and at night from 4-10 months and he got a mixture of BM and formula at daycare.

From months 4-8 I pumped at work but never got that much. I stopped pumping shortly after 8 months and was able to continue nursing at night but then DS went on a nursing strike and we never recovered. I think if I had gone back to pumping we might have but I just didn't have the energy.

I tried to nurse part time, just morning and night when LO was 10 months old and it dried up.... I have heard of many having success doing this though. I was down to 1 pump a day and when I quit that it seemed to be the end for me....

BFing has not improved at our house. Still super low supply and bad transfer - latching has gotten a bit better so I'm not in excruciating pain anymore (double bonus). I have pumped a couple of days to get a feel for my output. I get 1-2 ounces total in the middle of the night and during the first morning feed, and after that my milk declines so by the end of the day I only get about 1 ml.

I wouldn't mind nursing LO at night and during the morning, but having her nurse at the end of the day and pumping for two hours to get 2 ounces total is such a time suck that I'd prefer to just nurse part time. Is this even possible? If not, I may just stop altogether.
