I tried when I started gradschool, but ended up writing notes during class and using a full size laptop at home. Most of my homework and papers were done on my lunch break on a desktop

I use a chrome book for work (teacher). It's lightweight and inexpensive (under $200).
Pros: super easy to use
Cons: Google/gmail based so only google docs/drive

Slight learning curve for their versions on PowerPoint, word and excel

I have never been able to work of something like an iPad, even with an external keyboard.

I would love to give my husband's surface a test drive, but my MacBook air is alive and kicking, so for now, I stay with this.

If budget isn't an issue, I'd prefer to get an macbook air. I love my iPads and have all the accessories to make it as laptop like as possible, but when I have to do some real work, I still prefer an actual laptop.

@ElbieKay: @PurplePumps: @Truth Bombs: @Madison43: this is great feedback about the Surface! My DH briefly had one for work last year and it was very nice. My desktop is a PC, so I assume it would be easier to switch back and forth between than say with an iPad.

@muffinsmuffins: good point about the mini models. I wouldn’t want to type on those tiny keyboards either!

@MamaBear87: I don’t think I have to do printing or anything like that. And if I do, I’ll still have my desktop.

I have a very nice PC desktop set up with a huge screen, so I’ll definitely be keeping it and using it for any intensive work. I’m just pondering having something more portable so I can work/study elsewhere than in my little office corner at home.

I will also say that I recommend a laptop with a touch screen if you will be reviewing a lot of documents. I find it much easier to scroll that way. It's basically a tablet-like feature on the laptop. I don't really shop for computers much because they just give me one at work, so I don't know whether or not this is a standard feature these days.

Tablets are also super finicky for printing. They have fewer options and sometimes won't print certain things.
I'd just go with one of the super small laptops

@ElbieKay: agree. I have the surface (tablet with keyboard) and I love it for reviewing documents, taking handwritten notes, research, etc.... but if I have to write anything substantial, I switch to my laptop.

I use an iPad mini with keyboard everyday for work while seeing clients. It’s a medical clinic and we have online charting so I find it’s perfect to write notes and do files while I’m with clients, as well as to quickly look things up. However, for sending detailed emails, writing letters, and any heavy word processing stuff, I use the desktop computer all staff has access to. Since our files are online we have it all synced so can access it from anywhere. If I were you I would totally use a tablet in class with some sort of cloud or other based app for notes and keep your desktop for heavier writing and whatnot. It works super well for me. I would do a regular sized iPad though if you have a choice. I find the mini great but my male coworkers have trouble with the tiny keyboard. If I was typing for an hour in a lecture I think I would want the regular size.

I would get a very portable 12 or 13" laptop that could convert to tablet mode like a Surface too. I personally just can't use a table for much reading or writing with the small screen, and I just have to have a mouse for navigation if I'm doing a lot.

Personally, I would be fine with a tablet for receiving content, but I would want a small laptop if I have to write much. I could not imagine trying to produce documents on a tablet.

I have a newish Microsoft Surface through work. It's a proper laptop but it's pretty small and light. I would look into options like that.

I’m going back to school this fall (but it’s an online program) and I currently only use a desktop computer at home. I’m considering getting a small laptop or a tablet with keyboard so that I don’t have to be chained to my desk all the time. So tell me about using a tablet as a laptop, or if you think a laptop is still preferable to a tablet. Ideally, I would be able to switch relatively seamlessly between the desktop and the portable device for watching lectures, reading the material, researching and writing.
