My husband grew up with asthma. He spent some time in and out of hospitals as a child until they got it under control. In high school however, he was a distance runner and is still very active without much trouble. There are still occasions where he has some trouble, but when under control being active isn't a problem.

Hopefully Charlie grows out of his breathing troubles, poor little guy!

@Mrs. Bee: As his airways grow, there is a good chance that he'll grow right out of the toddler wheeze, so take heart!

@Mrs. Jacks: thanks that's what i'm hoping! the ped said that charlie is too young to technically have what we call asthma, but we just have to keep an eye on his wheezing and treat it accordingly!

@Mrs. Bee: We try never to provide a diagnosis of asthma until over the age of 3. Especially kids who've had RSV bronchiolitis, we call it reactive airways disease... The bronchospasm typically happens in response to colds... so take heart, it's not asthma until he repeatedly wheezes over the age of 3!

@Mrs. Bee: My nephew does and much like your son when he was younger he was sick a lot. The doctors prescribed steroids and the nebulizer often. My brother & SIL are convinced all the medication is what caused his asthma.

He's 8 now and he does not have really bad asthma to the point where he carries around a inhaler daily. But if he plays around too much he starts having trouble breathing.

There's not history of asthma in our family.

This is something I worry about too. Respiratory illnesses seem to run in DH's family quite strongly- of six, four have asthma, including one who was very bad as a child. Dh only developed it himself in the last few years. I myself never knew what it was to wheeze until I got an ear infection in my twenties and suspected asthma came with it, the doc still prescribes a reliever inhaler for me but I haven't needed to actually get one in about ten years.

All I can say to you is, at least it is perfectly treatable. If Charlie does wind up with full proper asthma, proper use of preventer and reliever inhalers will mean it doesn't need to interfere much with normal life for him.
Is there enough humidity/not too much in the air in your apartment? I'd imagine city air not feeling too great if you're wheezy.
Also, there's the Buteyko method- breathing exercises to control asthma- I know a few people who've had significant success with that, and apparently kids are great at picking it up quickly once shown.

Oh nooo! Poor Charlie!! I hope he starts to feel better soon. Being sick is never fun :)

I'm hoping Chloe doesn't get asthma... or allergies.. I have asthma that worsened during pregnancy, and have had allergies my entire life. My brother, sister and I were diagnosed as young children with viral induced asthma. My sister grew out of it, my brother still gets it on occasion, and I have full-blown Asthma. I have a nebulizer at home to use in case of emergencies, and have recently been put on a controlling asthma medicine. For the first time EVER, I can honestly say that I can breathe with little to no problems.

I had a friend in high school who had an asthma attack, and her rescue inhaler didn't work. She died before the ambulance got to her boyfriends house.

Asthma is definitely not something to mess with :( I'll keep Charlie in my thoughts!! I really do hope your peanut doesn't have it.

Charlie has been home from daycare this whole week because he was throwing up, had a fever, and a rash on his legs. I thought he just had a bad cold but when he started wheezing, we took him to the doctor. Turns out the rash was just contact dermatitis, but the poor boy had a cold, ear infections in both ears, and the pediatrician put Charlie on steroids for his wheezing.

Charlie has had RSV in the past and we've had to use a nebulizer on him several times. The pediatrician thinks that it could go either way with Charlie developing asthma! It was so devastating to hear!

We had to give him steroids for his wheezing, antibiotics for his ear infections, albuterol in the nebulizer for his wheezing, and tylenol for his fever. He was not a happy camper (except he loves eating Tylenol).

Does your LO have asthma? When were they diagnosed? Does it run in your family?
