We potty trained early, but, it was more about being done with washing diapers and high water bills than about cloth giving LO an edge. Most kids can probably potty train closer to 2 than to 3...but it is more work and it would have felt less worth it with disposables.

J was night/nap trained at 18 months, poop trained at 25, and has zero interest in pee training. I'm just starting the pee training push at 27 months because it is finally warm out. I think CDing helped because he knows when he pees he gets wet. Unfortunately he doesn't care about wetness.

Ours trained really quickly at 24 months and around 15 months was able to communicate that she needed a new diaper and was able to say “poop” while pooping at 18 months.

My daughter potty trained quickly with the cold turkey, bottomless method at 26 months. My son was super interested in potty and we tried the same, but now he’s 2.5 (about 33 months) and still having accidents a few times a week. He just doesn’t really care about being wet.

@Becky: true. And most of us washing those nasty diapers were pretty ready to be done!! My diaper sprayer/ water pressure was too aggressive so it was always such a nightmare washing them. And he always always leaked. No matter what diapers or what liners or fold or inserts or detergent or temperature I used....

@brownepiano: My son's early training was part him but mostly us as well. I read in this book that was our potty training bible (Oh Crap! by Jamie Glowacki) that said it really isn't biologically natural for kids to potty train- it's a modern social construct to sit on a toilet that they need to be taught. Essentially they may never be ready unless you make them. That changed how I saw the whole process. I got his ass on that toilet at 25 months (but he was very open to it and never really told me no.. at that point).

And I was SO SICK of washing those VILE cloth diapers.

We cloth diaper and potty trained early. It had nothing to do with ds readiness and everything to do with our readiness. I was pregnant with ds2 and didn't want two in diapers. I was also tired of cleaning poopy diapers.

@pachamama: I had heard about the discomfort thing too but don’t think that was true for my kids. One of them had awful diaper rashes so that’s a different discomfort. I think maybe it’s like how people who drink whole milk tend to be thinner: it’s not the whole milk making them thinner, it’s their awareness of nutrition and better eating habits.

DS is 28 months next week and we are “casually dabbling” in potty training. We do all cloth except for nighttime. He’s probably ready but I’m lazy. We are going to really get going in the next couple months or so

My first (mostly cloth diapered) used the potty part time before she was a year old. The real reason this happened was because we did elimination communication part time. She was aware of her bodily functions due to EC, I taught her the potty sign in conjunction with that, and she started signing to tell me she was ready to use it. Now, all that went to hell when she was almost 2.5 and decided she did not want to use the potty. She pretty much stayed off until just before 3. I don’t think cloth diapers increased her awareness very much. In fact, many of the cloth trainers (like a reusable pull up) were so difficult to pull down that they were a hindrance and probably harmed her confidence.

@Becky: yeah I wonder if that has something to do with it? My son was pretty early, at least in my circle, but we only did CD part time. I read somewhere there is a little more discomfort with cloth so they are more inclined to get on the potty.

I think DS1 would have potty trained at 19 months, but I had DS2 right about then and there was no way that was going to work.

DS2 is 19 months now and no where near as "ready" as DS1 was. But DS1 had really bad diaper rash and spent a lot of time with out a diaper from 9 months onward so I think that's what really gave him the head start.

DS1 trained at 28 months super easily. I waited until it was warm out as I didn't want to potty train in an NYC winter.

My DD1 was potty trained right at 24-25 months. She was ready sooner, but like above we took a trip right before her 2nd bday and it was easier to have her in diapers for it.
I don’t know if cloth was the reason she was trained so early or if it was just her. We are the only family we know who used cloth and she was potty trained sooner than our friends kids. Dd2 is in disposables and at 24 months is not even close to being potty trained. So maybe the cloth helped!

We also didn’t utilize pull ups for pt, just our regular diapers, naked time and the gerber cloth training undies.

DD1 was cloth diapered and potty trained just before 2 (~22-23 months). She may have been ready sooner but we wanted to keep her in diapers for the trip to Asia we took when she was 21 months. Not sure whether it was related to the cloth diapers - I guess we'll see when DD2 (also in CDs) turns 2 in another year and change

One thing I do think helped was switching straight to undies. I think the pullups would have confused her.

We're still not night trained at 3.5 though...

My DD was cloth diapered and potty trained at 21 months. I don't know if cloth was a factor though, except that it motivated us as parents to potty training because she'd outgrown her diapers and we didn't feel like buying more in a bigger size.

My little did not. She's 30 months and still in diapers, disposables now because she uses the toilet sometimes and her diapers were getting rank before I had enough to wash. That said I'm very relaxed about potty training, I'd rather change diapers than push her before she's ready. She had a short time last summer around 20 months when I think we could have trained her but it fell during 3 summer trips for us and no way was I adding that to vacation 😂
