@andrea: So glad to meet a mommy with a 20 month old! Most of my friends either have newborns or 3-4 year olds so it's hard to relate to what they're talking about (especially the ones with older kids).

@banana: Our LO's are the same age! I totally agree that milestones are important to track developmental delays, of course. But for competition's sake, it is really silly.

I honestly never compare milestones. It just doesn't really matter to me. Just because your baby is in the 99th percentile for height doesn't mean that he/she will be a giant and my baby will be a midget. LOL. My LO is in the 95th percentile for height but I don't think it's even a big deal at all.

I DO care about developmental delays though so I will "compare" that. My LO is 20 months and isn't speaking more than a few words so that worries me a bit. I don't compare to other kids his age for comparison sake (i.e. so so and is better than so so), but more to ensure that there's not something developmentally wrong. Health (physical, mental, developmental) is most important.

I ask other people about milestones because I'm usually not sure when things are supposed to happen and wonder when my lo might do them. But I don't compare, it's just curiosity. And luckily I don't know anyone else who compares either.

@Rubies: I don't even want to know what she would say about my LO being in the less than 5 percentile for weight. That is a very rude question to ask and has nothing to do with how healthy your baby is.

Personally I try not to keep track of any milestone for my own sanity. I don't want to compare my LO to future kiddos. Every kid develops at his/her own pace. I do hate when my in-laws bring up their friend's grandchildren who are only x weeks older/younger than my LO, and they are doing _______. It's like a huge competition to see who has the best grandchild. Ugh.

I have an acquaintance and she's all about how her LO is in the 95th percentile for this and the 98th percentile for that. It gets old REALLY fast because I really don't care. She always asks what percentile my LO is in and I find that rude. I just care that LO is healthy. Am I right or am I right?

@chopsuey119: well, if it's just something you do as part of day to day conversation then that is OK. My SIL is just one sided and she spends about 90% of our conversations talking about milestones. so it's kinda like ZZZZzzzzzZZZZZzzzzzz.

SIL and I have babies 3 months apart and we try not to compare. :) It's hard not to when you have babies so close together though.

For me, it is my SIL. We see each other maybe 4x a year and every time she loves to size up my LO to hers. It doesn't even bother me that much. It just makes me sad that her life is all about memorizing different milestones. Hopefully she doesn't end up giving her kids complexes.
