Depends! Sometimes, I see calories burned as calories to consume "for free." Ha! But, when I'm doing Bikram or other hot yoga, I just WANT to eat so healthy--I crave good-for-you stuff instead of junk! :)

When I was really good about it, I wanted to eat clean so I could really see the results of my workouts, instead of working out to burn off the crap I just ate.

@lawbee11: LOL yup!

For me, if I'm dieting and counting calories, I tend to exercise more because I'm paying attention to calories in vs calories out. If I'm not paying attention to what I eat, I don't make the extra effort to exercise.

i read that the best time to eat junk food is right after you have finished working out because your metabolism is still working overtime for a couple hours. needless to say, my workouts often end with fries or chocolate. ;)

When I'm exercising I'm much more likely to eat healthy because I don't want to mess up the hard work. So when I'm not exercising I'm just tubbing it up with food on the couch. :P

@mrbee: While i agree with @Mrs. High Heels: book excerpt, i have been reading this interesting book (The Cure for Everything) which states that people eat more because exercise makes them hungrier and they also justify that they deserve it because they exercised. I wish it weren't the case though!

It usually goes one of two ways:

(1) I shouldn't eat that because I will have to exercise twice as long tonight to burn it off.

or

(2) I just worked my ass off so pass the ice cream! :silly:

Yes, I don't want to undo all my hard work! They talk about this in the book The Power of Habit.... it is considered a Keystone habit!

“When people start habitually exercising, even as infrequently as once a week, they start changing other, unrelated patterns in their lives, often unknowingly. Typically people who exercise start eating better and becoming more productive at work. They smoke less and show more patience with colleagues and family. They use their credit cards less frequently and say they feel less stressed. It’s not completely clear why…‘Exercise spills over,’ said James Prochaska, a University of Rhode Island researcher. ‘There’s something about it that makes other good habits easier.’” (p. 109)
