Yeah, I feel like if she's yawning, rubbing her eyes or fussing, we've skipped to overtired. I have to go by the clock, using the guidelines in Moms on Call.

@looch: this is what I keep hearing ... that I should be looking for more subtle signs like slowing down or not making eye contact. My LO yawns sometimes 10 mins after waking and I know he won't go to sleep so soon! I will be staring at him these next few weeks though! Thank you.

Our biggest sign was that los attention span would get incredibly short. He would not like to be in one place for more than 30 seconds. Now that he is older he still does this. When he starts getting tired he wont sit and play with anything. I went by the clock but if i saw yawns or noticed his attention span getting very short i would put him down sooner.

Usually, if you are seeing tired signs, you have missed the window to put your kid down...at least that was how it was for my son. If I waited until I saw him yawn, he wouldn't sleep!

My LO is littler than yours (3 mo) but she's a great napper usually and I go by the clock generally. 1.5 hours after she last got up I take her to put her back down. She almost always starts rubbing her eyes about 5 min before I'm going to take her up. If she had a short nap prior and starts rubbing her eyes early I do put her down earlier. I don't really notice any tired cues for her beyond rubbing her eyes, yawning, and shortly after those two she begins fussing.

Like the others said, around 6 months we went to a 2 nap schedule with naps at around 9am and 2pm.

I had the best luck going by a schedule. I hardly ever wake J up at a specific time on purpose, but I try to lay him down for naps and bedtime at the same time each day (and his waking just naturally follows suit). I tried to do that from the beginning around 6 months when we "nap trained" and it worked beautifully for us. Good luck!

I had better luck going by a clock- 1.5-2 hours after wake up, depending on how long she had slept, when she was little. Lots of trial and error figuring out the right timing, but once I figured it out that was much better than tired cues for us.

I rock/bounce my 5.5 month old to sleep so I don't worry too much about my apparent inability to pick up on his tired cues. He goes off to sleep without much trouble 1.5 hrs after waking and 2hrs of waketime later in the day.

I am getting prepared to sleep and nap train at 6 months. I know you're supposed to put them down as soon as they show tired signs, but I am really bad about noticing them until baby starts rubbing his eyes (a late sign I'm told). Or, baby will yawn minutes after waking up!

Do you go by tired signs? A set wake time? Or by the clock? What would you recommend I do to nap train??
