Yes I had it 3 times with LO, and probably 3-4 times a clogged duct that had potential for mastitis. It was often in the same breast/similar place. It was horrible :(

I found that if I massaged every day and caught the clogged duct early it wasn't as bad and sometimes didn't progress to full mastitis. I was also religious about hot showers. Fwiw I took lecithin too but I don't know that I saw a difference.

I'm sorry it's terrible :(

@mrskc: I take lecithin granules as I'm terrible at swallowing pills. I use Optima (see below) and just add a heaping teaspoon to my cereal every morning. I don't find it to have much of a flavour and when I add it to my nuts and oats cereal, it blends right in.

@mrskc: I had this one (the one on left). I forget how many I took! Maybe Google lecithin for nursing?

@SleepyMonkey: that's interesting. I didn't know it could be from bacteria from baby's mouth. I felt like I got no warning to try and clear it up with out antibiotics. One moment I was fine and then within 2 hours I suddenly had severe symptoms.

@mrskc: I second the rec to use lecithin! I was told that once you get a plugged duct, it is more likely to plug again. There was an analogy similar to a balloon being easier to blow up each subsequent time but I can't remember it exactly. With DD1, I was getting blocked ducts about once a week right around three months PP. I started taking lecithin every day and never had one after that - it was amazing! With DD2, I have taken lecithin since the start and haven't had any issues this time, 9.5 months in. I swear by it and recommend it to everyone! :-) Hope you're feeling better soon.

I only had it once and never noticed a clog until I woke up one morning with a high fever and a sore breast that looked like an overinflated basketball. I'm sorry you are sick, but I'm glad you are feeling better.

I don't know if it makes you more susceptible. But I did have a mild case of mastitis without a plugged duct. It felt like a bruise but there wasn't any milk stuck in there. Doc said bacteria from baby's mouth can travel up a duct. She also said to apply heat to the area, which promotes blood flow to the area and it could heal faster that way. She wrote a prescription for an antibiotic but said to try the heat first. I was feeling mildly achy and slightly feverish but then I applied heat all day/night and it got better on its own.

I only got it once and I never felt a clog. I wouldn't have known it was mastitis except I had a red triangle on my chest. I had two other clogged ducts without mastitis that were much more painful/accute (as opposed to general awfulness of mastitis).

@sorrycharlie: I'll look into that! I have something for milk ducts that I got last time but never took it. Maybe I should start.

I had it twice with O - once at 6 or 7 weeks, coupled with thrush. And again at 8 months as a result of a blocked duct. Frickin sucks!

I took lecithin on the rec of a LC, who said I had ..stickier milk - for lack of a better word. I was crazily prone to blocked ducts until I started taking that. I got it at whole foods.

Ugh, I've got mastits for the second time now! 2 times now in 3 months. I never had any issues like this breastfeeding my son.

So I only had slight pain in the right breast. It must have been a plugged duct? I chalked it up to nothing. Then I suddenly got body aches and chills about 1-2 days later. I'm on antibiotics now and I feel so much better already.

Does having mastitis once make you more susceptible to getting it again?

Is a plugged duct the only way to get mastitis? I really didn't notice a plug. But I'm going to be paying way more attention now to any breast pain.

Any tips to prevent this from happening again?
