I highly dislike. I have a name. I also hyphenated my last name. Most people don't do this, so I don't see it often. It also tends to be people who don't know me very well.

@Arden: The funny thing is I'm not really a formal person and I definitely don't mind not being called Dr. And I also don't mind being called by my husband's last name in social situations. But the combination of dropping my Dr and calling me by my husband's first name really irks me.

I think it's kind of cute, as usually the only people in my circle who address things that way are older relatives. It's something of a generational divide. I didn't even take DH's last name, but I'm okay with it. I might think it was odd if someone my own age did it though.

I hate it! And I took husband's last name. I address things using both first names (and last, if they're different). Or I just do "Mr. and Mrs. (Lastname)".

A few years ago, some friends of ours got married and combined last names (so they both took each other's name, hyphenated with their own.) Does that make sense? Anyway, his family held a hometown reception for them, and made a big banner that said "Congratulations, Mr. & Mrs. (guy's last name only)!". It was kind of a slap in the face, because it was known that the guy's family wasn't happy about the unconventional name change of their son.

@kjn: The Dr and Mrs thing would really annoy me if I were a doctor as well. That's really bothersome that people wouldn't recognize your title as well as his.
I think I might end up getting passive aggressive and returning it to sender, marked "No Dr. and Mrs. at this address. Home is occupied by Dr. and Dr.". lol

Sorry but I'm not a Mrs and neither of those are my name! I don't know why it bothers me so much but it totally does!

It doesn't bother me. I usually address cards that way to a married couple, Mr. and Mrs. A. Smith. If it's a casual thing and they have kids, I'll write The Smith Family. It's still thought of as the proper way to address a married couple on an envelope so it doesn't feel like a slight to me.

I think a lot of people in this thread misunderstood the question. I believe the OP is not referring to cards addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", but to cards addressed to "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith."

And yes, it bothers me a lot. At our wedding I insisted we would be introduced as Mr. and Mrs. H, not Mr. and Mrs. Hisname H.

I actually like it. I love that I am his wife and I have no qualms with sharing his name. I am also very traditional and I didn't even realize it might rub people the wrong way. I always address an envelope like this or I use "The Blank Family" if they have kids on a not formal envelope.

I don't mind. I think it's easier to write that way. I always get a little stuck when addressing couples that the wife didn't change her name. Sometimes I address both by just 1st name, or usually just "The XYZ Family".

It does annoy me. I give a pass to very old relatives but deep down it still bothers me to see “Mr. and Mrs. His Name Only”. I am my own person, I have my own name. I had my own name before we got married; I have my own name now – and they know this! Also, I’m more than just a “Mrs.”. It just rubs me the wrong way.

@Adira: I didn't take his name, and I don't make an exception socially. Not that I'm going to make a big stink about it, but my name is my name is my name, no matter what the situation. When I get cards addressed to Mr. and Mrs. His Name, it just shows me that that person must not know me well at all :)

I do realise it's the traditional way to do it, I just personally find it old fashioned. I'm proud to have his last name but I didn't take on the first one too.

I always address married couples as Mr. and Mrs. <Husband's First Name> <Husband's Last Name>. Isn't that the norm? And even if you didn't take his last name, socially, you are still Mrs. <Husband's Name> even if professionally (and technically) you still have your maiden name.

So this definitely doesn't annoy me. I'm curious what you want it to be addressed as? Just leave off the "Mr. and Mrs." part and address it as <Husband's First Name> and <Wife's First Name> <Husband's Last Name>?

@travelgirl1: Yup. Mr. and Mrs. John Smith. But I'm always sure to acknowledge exceptions properly (spouses with different last names, wives who have titles, etc). My mom is a real etiquette stickler so she taught me all the rules.

I don't know that it bothers me, but it does kind of make me laugh - like, how old-fashioned and almost quaint, I guess. I have a hyphenated last name so I realize it's quite long to write both of our full names, though.

It's the formal way of addressing. I address my family cards that way (with first name, not the first inital) and will continue to do so. I'm proud to be Mrs. ___ ______. If I had a different last name than my husband, I still would be okay with people doing it. It's easier to write mr and mrs than it is to write mr. john doe and mrs. jane eyre.....
